I just moved to Austin a few weeks ago to attend UT. Is anyone familiar with the shops in the area? Which ones are cheap or good selection? Also where do I buy cases of craft beer? I am from PA and cases are sold by distributors which I don't think exist here.

    Thanks

isnt that going to be more expensive though? i see six packs are about a buck, 2 at most less than pa but that still seems like more money

im a grad student, funds are always low. good prices allow me to drink beer more often. getting less of the same beer for more money is never better. I just don't see beer in Austin being the same price as in PA, it cant be

My list is pretty widespread, and you probably don't know where a lot of the places are.

If you're downtown, and looking to shop, East 1st Grocery should be your first stop - Sam (owner) is an awesome guy, and can hook you up. You can also try Quickie Pickie and the bottle shop at Craft Pride.

Go a little further south out of downtown and try Central Market Westgate, Specs Brodie, and some of the smaller shops like South Lamar Wine & Spirits.

Hope you can grow facial hair. It's a resident requirement. I can't grow any that's why I live down south.

Central Market N. Lamar & Hyde Park Market are also a couple miles within campus, if you want convenience.

lol. i do see a lot of facial hair and hipster people... The city is definitely more liberal than I was hoping but I wasn't turning down a great scholarship at UT and nice weather because of it that is for sure. I do love the amount of cool restaurants though, but there does seem to be a hipster and pretentious feel to a lot of it.

Hipster, yeah. Pretentious, nah. Lots of great people, very friendly. Just don't talk about abortion, religion, or politics.

Nothing pretentious about Austin, but yeah, it's hipster central. Lots of cool people, though (I'm a transplanted New Englander) and GREAT BAs down here. The level of connection and generosity in the beer community here truly is amazing

Thanks for the list. Have to look up the local breweries and whats available in this market. Who would I be looking for if I were looking for American brewed Belgian style and sours? Not that i drink those that much with their price but

Belgians in town would start you at Adelberts. Jester King is all you need for local sour fix. Hops & Grain and Austin Beerworks are also both brewing amazing, world class beers.

I just went to Hyde Park Market. It is close, great selection, and insanely high prices. I am from PA which has insane beer laws and all liquor stores are owned by the state. This makes prices really high. This place had higher prices then most six pack shops in PA. Some stuff was a good price. Got a New Belgian, its not available in PA and was only 10 bucks. They had a bottle of Cavit wine for 18 dollars... In communist PA it only is listed at 15 and is then on sale most months for 11-12.

Just read reviews on this place here on BA. Seems like this is a known fact, great selection, high prices.

Yup, I only go there if I'm in search of something that I can't find at other places. They seem to have a lot of variation in their pricing. Some things are reasonable, other things not so much.

I just moved here as well, and I found that Blackstar Co-op has great sours. They do a different one every tuesday I think. Also, real ale is about to come out with a sour i believe.

You went to one of the most expensive places to by bottles in Austin. Try going to to the Hancock HEB instead if you don't want to go far from campus.

I will likely never go back. I drink a lot of beer. Their loss.

A large selection does not require high prices. If they want to try to make abnormal profits in selling beer then I will not help them in doing so. If the people of Austin support it, and they are able to charge more money for no reason, successfully, then good for them. I, however, gain no value in shopping there.

I had a owner of a mid size brewery in PA speak in one of my classes, I studied finance in undergrad. The amount of money breweries make compared to the middlemen is sad. By paying higher prices and supporting these mark up ,we take money from the breweries, and this does the good beer industry no benefit.
