Depends. What kind of food are you looking for? You're not going to find any beer in Pittsford that you won't find in Buffalo, so I'd suggest stopping off at someplace that sells a good garbage plate, regardless of the drink selection.
Wow...I didn't realize just how isolated Buffalo was from that part of our culture. http://rocwiki.org/Garbage_Plates
University Hots on mainstreet - i went there all the time when i was in college....they have plates. As far as lunch in pittsford goes - Max Market on Monroe and Clover is pretty good. Its a market with some tables in the back. Pretty good soup and sandwiches...solid prepared food to go also. I havent been there in about 2 months, but their french onion is awesome http://miseenplacemarket.com/ This place is about 15 minutes from pittsford. pretty solid beers. It is almost the same type of place, a market with some tables. Everything is fresh and delicious. I eat here about 2x a week.
It depends on how much time you have, if your main focus is food or beer and which direction you want to go after leaving Pittsford. If you flesh out your question a bit more, we could offer you the best answer. If your main focus is to go to the one place which has the best beer selection along with good pub food, then the Tap & Mallet is your answer. It's not far from the 490 West - Goodman exit which will take you back to Buffalo. A nice little beer store named Nathaniel Square Corner Store is nearby if you want to pick up some beer before you head back. http://www.tapandmallet.com/ http://www.nathanielsquare.com/ Cheers!
My brother in law and sister in law live in Pittsford. Dinosaur Barb has a great beer selection. Custom Brewcrafters is worth the trip. And don't forget a garbage place and Rochester Red Wing game.
Kind of sounds like he's in for a morning meeting, then stopping somewhere before heading back. Not sure a CBC trip would be in order. If beer is a must, I would suggest the Gate House Cafe. Tends to get overlooked (in my opinion), but the burgers are pretty good, the garlic fries are to die for, and they're the guys who opened my eyes to Long Trail Coffee Stout a few years ago. http://thegatehousecafe.com/menu/famous-burgers/ That said, Tap & Mallet is always a good choice. And if there isn't an authentic English pub in Buffalo, The Old Toad might be a good bet for a more unique experience that you won't get back home.
I am going for an 8:00 AM meeting ( 3349 Monroe). I expect to be finished around noon & then head back to Bflo. Gate House looks good to me.
For future reference Rback, check out this wiki for Rochester Restaurants - very helpful: http://rocwiki.org/Restaurants The Gate House has good burgers. A better one is found on the lunch menu at Richardson's Canal House - I had a very good Kobe burger there recently: http://richardsonscanalhouse.net/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx The best one IMHO in Rochester is made right nearby the Gate House at Restaurant Good Luck called the Good Luck Burger (cut in 4 pieces made to be shared - 1lb) - however Good Luck is not open for lunch. Buffalo is a better town for burgers with the best one at Sterling Place Tavern along with Cole's and the famous Grover's. Enjoy your trip!
The Gate House has a decent selection of taps etc.but it certainly would not be considered a beer bar. It probably has about 8 craft beers on tap from what I can recall - others may be able to give you a more exact number. I'm sure you'd be able to find a satisfactory selection from the beer menu. But again, you would not go to the Gate House over numerous other places in town for the beer selection.
I think the thing to keep in mind here is that there really isn't any reason to select a place based first on the beer list, since virtually anything available in Rochester is also available in Buffalo. The food, on the other hand, will vary much more between the cities - thus, my suggestion to prioritize that over the beer.
Sounds like Rback has found a place to enjoy himself. I'd disagree slightly with pitweasel. I know where he's coming from with his comment that you can find most beers in Buffalo that you can find in Rochester. However, the beers on tap at any given time can be very different at the best beers bars in Rochester as compared to those in Buffalo. I just checked the tap lists at the Tap and the Old Toad here in Rochester and they are indeed very different than the tap lists at Cole's and the Blue Monk in Buffalo. So if Rback or someone else was prioritizing beer, there would be a good reason to do so based on the availability of a given beer at any given time in each city. Cheers!
Did the Gate House for lunch & I can report the food was A+. Mushroom-swiss burger with special sauce was served on a ciabatta roll, very nice. Kodak pizza was also worthwhile. Black & tan onion rings taste great with little of the residual grease you sometime get. 5 taps including 2 from 3 heads brewery-had 2 pints of the (California style) IPA and would rate them slightly above average. The (upcoming) star is the building. Looked like an old factory or warehouse. 3 stories tall that is being refurbished with restaraunts like Gate house plus artist kiosks. I will make it a point to visit again a year from now. Thanks for advice boys-Good on ya
