“ …but their distinctiveness from earlier days is gone.” My familiarity with Jever is not as long as yours. My first Jever was about 7-8 years ago when my niece and her boyfriend (husband now) brought back a couple of Jever bottles back from a vacation/visit to Germany. My first sip of Jever was a “wow” moment for me. It was bitter and very dry; a very enjoyable combo for me. I would very much like to go into Mr. Peabody’s way-back machine and drink a Jever from circa 1990. I will be willing to bet that Jever of 1990 would be absolutely f@#$ing awesome! I fully recognize that I have unfortunately missed that moment but even the present day Jever is an enjoyable beer for me since I really enjoy the dry aspect of that particular beer.

There is an idea/concept of “perceived bitterness”. This is a topic I am still trying to get better informed about. I have a suspicion that due to the fact that Jever is extremely dry that is likely has a higher “perceived bitterness”. I will continue to research that aspect.

    Cheers!

Below is my description of the 8 month Jever I drank last weekend. I also noted virtually zero nose...

"The Jever wasn't as good, but it was also 8 months old. It tasted like a Prima Pils with faded hops, and I'm not surprised. It was by no means skunked (score!), but the nose was terribly muted, and the hops were restrained."

I'd say that's a good way of stating it. I found myself begging for more malt flavor. Perhaps I've had so much Rothaus that it has become my default point-of-reference for other pilsners.

Looking back I'd have to say it was more like 34.

Jokes aside, I have no idea, I couldn't answer that question.

Interesting timing on trying to characterize "nose" from lagers. As I was drinking an H-P "amber-Märzen" the other night I wasn't getting a great deal of aroma from the beer -- something I tend to notice in most German-style beers I drink.

Some of the German beers will give me a great deal of DMS in more of the "fresh" sense than the "cooked vegetable" sense, and some Czech Pilsners carry good hops in the nose, but nothing as big as other beers out there.

Got to wondering, maybe this is normal and we're used to so much nose from some of the big, eatery, top-fermented beers that it's skewed perceptions? I guess I'll have to go back and look at some of my old Jackson or Eckhardt books to see what perception was like in the days before the big boom.

I wouldn't go that far. There are plenty of lagers with a nice aroma. Spaten Hell, Rothaus, Alpirsbacher and Weihenstephaner Pilsners, and others I'm sure if I thought on it some.

Don't forget, you're getting the beers much more fresh than I, it could also be a (bad) byproduct of Pasteurization.

OTOH, I get a lot of fresh micro lagers that strike me similarly. And don't misinterpret my theory, I can definitely smell what's supposed to be in the beer, it's just not a big aroma -- but I have to wonder if it should be.

    K
Keesmann Herren pils too. Best pilsner I can think of for aroma/flavour complexity

According to the European Beer Star Award competition (as regards German Pilsner):

    2) GermanStyle Pilsner

Colour: light straw up to golden

    Hop bitterness: high

Hop flavour and aroma: moderate, quite obvious

    Attenuation degree: high

    Body: medium to light

Flavour and aroma: little residual sweetness

    No fruity esters or Diacetyl

    Dense and rich foam

    Beer is filtered

    No chill haze

    Analytics:

    Original gravity: 11.0 – 12.9 °Plato

    Apparent extract: 1.5 – 3.0 °Plato

    Alcohol: 3.6 – 4.2 % by weight, 4.0 – 5.0 % by volume

    Bitterness: 25 50 IBU

    Prost!

Jack: for someone who tore the competition judges a new one when they completely botched the evaluation of one of your beers, you sure do like to reference their "knowledge" on here a lot....

It was suggested (and rightfully so) that I post about my consumption of a Konig Pilsener in this thread. This is my first time having one (well three now), date on the can was 02.20.2014. I take this to mean it's a six month old can.

Still getting some (albeit faded) crisp hop bitterness in the middle, but there's this other taste I get heavily in the nose, right after the first sip, and then lingering in the finish. I defer to the forum to help me pin point it, and whether it's due to age, or if it's simply how this brew is.

I can best describe the taste as that "Heineken skunk" some refer to (I know it's not true skunk, I know what a skunked beer is like).

I'm going to coin a phrase here: Internetbiere (i.e. beers that without the hype generated on the Internet by beer geeks interested in justifying the absurd lengths they went to in order to obtain them -- and the subsequent high ratings they receive -- would be seen as what they are: mediocre experiments).

Can't help you. Konig for me was middle of the pack, mostly unremarkable either way. I didn't get any "Heineken skunk" from it. To me, Konig was too bland to have any characteristic, positive or negative.

Ha. Nice. Now imagine doing the same thing for a beer that has no local following -- in fact has never been tasted by a single human being before -- from a brewery that is less than 3 years old. Internetbiere....

EDIT: the beer I'm referencing is now Top 5 on the BA Top New beers list. And that, meine Damen und Herren, is how U.S. "craft" beer has achieved the status of best in the world.

It's another case of make belief. And equally absurd than the claims of the blind RHG followers.

Precisely. And just like the RHG is built-in advertising, so is the hype of being on one of the BA Top Beers lists.

Wow... we've managed to link existentially the RHG to BA effervescence. That feat in itself is worth philosophical research, over beer of course.
