I hate everyone here. I live in Oklahoma. Aside from rochefort, Prairie, and bernardus, good beer is scarce.

The store I'm talking about isn't in Iowa. My town is pretty mediocre for beer selection. Luckily I'm in eastern Iowa and a quality liquor store is less than a 5 mile drive away from me in Illinois. It's great, considering the majority of the people in my area don't give a single shit about craft beer.

Here's an example. I walk into this place in the middle of August and Founders Imperial Stout, Devil Dancer, Breakfast Stout, Backwoods Bastard, KBS, Red Rye, and Curmudgeon are all still sitting on the shelves. Hell, they even had Bourbon County Cherry Rye and Coffee Stout sitting there for weeks. Even Dogfish Head World Wide Stout sat there for months before anyone picked it up. It's awesome.

I'm with you on that. I have to keep some kind of price barriers because I know what happens when I let them down. I thought the first time I bought a 4-pack that it would be a once-in-a-while indulgence, but now I find it being a weekly thing.

Every time I go to Marty's I'm more disappointed with their prices than with their selection. But I did notice that no whales are ever on the shelf. Used to be my go-to place for tea, mustard, hot sauce and sparkling wine. Even applied for a job there once--never heard back.

Less bragging than salivating...he doesn't exactly open up his stash to employees either, alas alas :slight_frown:

Yeah, our shelf selection is...well, honestly fairly plebeian. I blame a lot of that on the sheer amount of product we move over the course of a given week/month/whatever...when you have hundreds of people coming in over the course of a single day buying beer (and frequently doing so in large quantities), anything even remotely interesting tends to vanish alarmingly quickly. These days we tend to just hide anything with a limited supply or a time-limited release behind the cigar counter as soon as it comes in, and wait for the more beer-savvy customers to come to us directly with inquiries. (And I do mean anything that's in limited supply...even Lunch, which we get in every six weeks or so, gets hidden away.) That said, we do try to get in as much of the more esoteric/limited stuff as we can...it just also tends to vanish correspondingly quickly.

On a side note, I know the owner of the store very well. There's a wing joint next to his store that has jumped into the craft beer scene with both feet. He tends to stock the same beers that they're pouring that week/month. He and I discuss potential stocking orders on a monthly basis, as we share the same ideas about quality beers.
