Taking my son out to University of Michigan later this week and since we're taking a big-ass van to carry all his stuff, and I'd hate to bring it back empty ....

I could use some advice from those who know Michigan distribution better than I do (in other words, at all). I was hoping some Midwestern brewers like Surly or FFF might be available in Ann Arbor, but alas, the distribution maps on their websites say no.

I'll definitely load up on Founders, but I can get most of their beers here in PA.

So tell me Michiganers, what super-secret gems should I be stocking up on? Thanks to all for your counsel.

    Odd Side Ales - Citra
    Greenbush
    Vivant.

They are over by lake Michigan though, but they all bottle, so there should be some local distribution at least.

Bells- Two Hearted Ale, and Bells The Oracle if you can find it. Congrats to your son! Cheers!

The Livery has only bottled a couple times, and they were brewery only releases.

Ah very true. I meant to say Vivant :stuck_out_tongue: I always get the 2 mixed up for some reason.

Load up on some dark horse, hit up the brewpub if at all possible. If I'm not mistaken Three Floyds doesn't distribute to Michigan at all.

If I were you I'd be coming back with a truck load of stuff from Bell's and Short's.

Anything by Dark Horse and New Holland Dragon's Milk should be reasonably easy to find

Right Brain just started canning their Pale Ale so that should be really fresh

    Second anything by Odd Sides

Go to Arbor brewing and hit Liberty Street on your way out of town

I'd be loading up on the darkhorse myself, but michigan has about a thousand hidden local breweries that they just keep to themselves. Don't be afraid to take suggestions from locals in michigan.

Not from there but I went to a festival in Detroit in May. Short's Humahopalicious is GREAT!

Get some Shorts and Greenbush (unless you can get it out by you) Huma-Lupa-Licious IPA..solid IPA Short's The Soft Parade if you like fruit beers. Greenbush has the Anger black IPA, Sunspot hefe, and Closure pale. all great beers!

Two bottle shops stand out in memory from recent visits.

    Morgan and York on Packard
The Plum Market on N. Maple Road

In terms of Price x Convenience, etc. I had the most success on a couple of visits at the Plum Market.

Forget about the Bells unless its something you particularly want a sixer of. We get most all of their stuff here in PA. Same with Dark Horse.

Shorts is a good choice and has lots of variety and good stuff. New Holland is hard to find in PA but some does get here. There are some other local places to sample that you may find such as Dragonmead & Kuhnenens (sp?).

If you like Gueuze, Kriek, etc. you should be able to find a ready supply of Hanssens which by the bottle is harder to find in PA.

But you could do a lot worse than just stocking up

I would also suggest stopping in Toledo, OH at Andersons Market. I guess there are three of them. They might have FFF available since I believe OH gets it. You are correct, MI does not.

Even all the special shit? We get some JP just across the border in ID, but mostly just the standard offerings.

I definitely won't be buying a lot of Bell's product. As you say, we can get it when we want it, and I know it's heresy to say here, I've yet to have a Bell's beer that I don't have options in the same style that I greatly prefer.

I will check out Founder's selection to see what they might have that I can't get at home, though.

    Thanks for the detailed response.

Thanks everybody! This is great info. Just a heads up, each of you might be getting a brief, very violent visit from my wife when next month's Mastercard bill arrives, but it's all for a good cause...Beer!
