Heading out of LHR this Friday morning on the first BA to Munchen

    Rough itinerary:-

Fri - lunch in Regensburg at the Furthlisches Brauhaus
Early evening stop at Gasthof Kraus in Hirschaid
Arrive Bamberg 19.00 ish and head to Keesman, Cafe Abseits and maybe finish up at Shclenkerla for some smoked from the wood Aktion !

Saturday we are heading to Forchheim

The following brauhauses on my radar so likely to visit at least 2 (I did post in the old forum for which ones were the best according to those who had visited have some vague memories ...)

Eichhorn and Grief I think as priority then Hebandandz and Neder if time allows

back to Bamberg ... rude not to pop into Abseits again then Griefenklau and Klosterbrau and who knows it would be rude not to seek out some kind of Rausch Aktion !!!

Sunday a hearty lunch at the Hofbrauhauskeller at Freising before flying home

Counting down the hours at work now!

    Prost!

Sounds excellent. I know you worked carefully on putting that itinerary together, but if you have time you may want to make a trip out to Schesslitz and Brauerei Barth-Senger. The place is an absolute classic "living room" pub with some rustic but delicious dark Vollbier -- and it's apparently closing in a couple of weeks. Would be a terrible shame to be there and miss this last opportunity to experience a true Franconian classic.

Have fun, it sounds like a great trip. I wish I had more time to devote to exploring Franconia properly...

Looks good and I did just take a look into it

Unfortunately the bus service on the weekend is pretty limited and the minimum time you get at Schlesslitz is 2 and a half hours, where as I'd happily pop there for an hour this means taking a 3 and a half hour chunk out of the middle of the day, so would not sit well with a trip to Forchheim!

I've put it to a group vote

There is a way to build it into our plans but means an early start - 09.25 bus, after a heavy night

Also means an early start on the beer Aktion ! 10am opening, bus back from Schesslitz @ 11.28 !

I'm game, I'll see what the others think!

Forgot that you're using primarily public transport. Let us know if you make it out. Maybe best to call them beforehand to make sure they aren't closing before this weekend!

It has been reported on Fred Waltman's page that Barth-Senger will close at the end of April.

I hope that you simply forgot to mention Spezial. IMO, no trip to Bamberg would be complete without a stop in Spezial.

Don't worry "Rausch Aktion" also encompasses spezial!

I only specifically mentioned the brauhauses I had not visited on my previous trips to Bamberg!

Cheers for the further info I will attempt to get in touch before venturing out there.

Greifenklau will usually let you do an impromptu brewery tour (at least they used to). Very worthwhile as you'll likely get a view into the old sandstone cellars and a look at their Kuehlschiff. Their beer is rustic, but I, for one, love it. Lived right across the street for a year or so and it was my local.

Klosterbraeu is a great place for food and beer, but they'll only do tours with 10 or more people (and no, they won't accept a group that comprises local homeless, I can say from experience  ). The wait staff can get kinda surly at times, but generally they're OK. If the brewery shop on the corner of Judenstrasse is open be sure to visit (great glassware and some cool growlers, posters, etc.).

Looking forward to the report, as I plan my next trip (hopefully for this year).

And to be clear, I have been to Schlenkerla on every visit - just the 3 left to tick off !

I'm thinking of brining an empty case to load up on beers for the return journey also !

I'll put a report on some time next week!

    Prost!

This sounds excellent - hope you have a great trip. I'm seriously going to have to consider a visit to Bamberg later in the year....

I usually bring my "wine trolley" (a rolling carry-on type suitcase fitted to hold 12 wine bottles, with padding, etc.). Works for beer just as well as wine. :grinning:

My buddy and I are planning on phoning a few favorite breweries from around Bamberg to have them deliver cases to the address of the vacation apartment we'll be renting so that we'll be fully stocked by the time we get there. Let us know if you want the leftovers! (You do live there, right?)

No, I don't live in Bamberg, though I wish I did. I am in the US. Ha, I thought you lived there.

Game on - everyone is happy to head to Schesslitz, largely based on the fact it is last chance saloon for this brewery (pardon the pun)!

Also found this one in said town

Will see if hotel reception can give Senger a ring on Fri pm to see if they will be open Saturday morning

How many people in your group? You might consider a taxi or hired car to shuttle you up there and back, with perhaps a stop in Merkendorf or Memmelsdorf on the way back. You can find taxis (incl. vans) at the Bahnhof, or you can phone Bamberg Taxi +49 951 2080468 (they speak English on the phone). http://www.bambergtaxi.de/index.english.html

    There's 4 of us

We already have planned the bulk of the day in Forchheim so will stick to original plan

Stopping off anywhere else will severely limit the time in Forchheim (4 or 5 establishments to visit)

We'll probably get a Lainder ticket for bus and rail - E30 for all 4 of us for the day

Introuducing taxi's is only going to push the cost up!

Not since the early 2000s! Lived there all total about 6 years. Still looking for vacation apartments to purchase, though!
