I'd love to use styro shippers, but killing the slosh is a bitch if not near impossible. I've settled on a 12 cube bracketed by a 14 cube, and lots on bubble wrap and peanuts. Peanuts are great you get a lot of buffer.

Listen, dawg. You knew the risk when you got into this high stakes game of slinging beers.

You just gotta grin your teeth and take it long a true thug. After all, you were overstepping the UPS shipping policy. Resend that mofo and don't leave your blood hanging.

Great advice here. I bag each bottle individually and about half the time I also bag the styro shipper or box inside a box. If a bottle leaks in anything I package it's not going to get the outer box wet.

Another correct answer. They care about leaking. Best advice is don't drop it off at an official fedex or UPS location. In my opinion they tend to ask more questions. I've never once had the independent shipping place care how many boxes I drop off or what they sound like.

I know this topic gets hit on a lot but I thought I might throw in a little more advice that might bridge the gap between "Box wasn't packed well enough to protect contents" and "Box was packed way beyond reason and could survive a catapult ride".

The UPS notice says that the package was damaged not the contents. If something happens to the outer shipping container, maybe it gets torn on the corner of the shelf on the truck, UPS will often times inspect the package for damage and if the contents are ok, repack it and ship it. I know the note says contents were discarded, but it may have very well been a handling issue on UPS's part and once they saw it was booze, tossed it.

OP - Bottom line is that if you want to get to the bottom of what's up just give them a call. You will talk to someone in a call center who is receiving tons of calls just like yours and they aren't going to call the beer cops. Worst case is they will read a note from your order info saying there was beer and they tossed it, or due to danger from broken glass they tossed it. It is probably the quickest and most accurate way to get the info you are looking for. Just have your tracking number ready. When you get to the automated phone part, speak your tracking number, then hit 0 until it transfers you to a live person.

Sadly, I think the majority of the "You're screwed," advice is also the most correct advice. It sounds like you packed the hell out of it, so I won't cast aspersions on your packing ability, but the unfortunate answer is that you don't really have a recourse. Sure, you could call UPS and ask for more info - HOW did it get damaged - but that's a little risky, and you're unlikely to get an answer.

Well, I got a phone call from UPS yesterday and a letter in the mail. I was rather nervous when they called, however it went a lot smoother than I thought. The customer rep informed me the box was damaged and they attempted to repackage, but the bottles did break so they had to discard them. He then explained to me how I should pack the bottles next time in order to prevent something like this, and in the case a box of mine does get damaged in the future, they will cover it under the insurance, given it is packed to their specifications. He mentioned the contents were beer, but didn't say once I couldn't ship beer. Weird! I got a letter in the mail today from them, basically saying the same thing. Lesson learned here for sure. Thank you to everyone for all the great advice, I really do appreciate it!

Letter states the below which is basically what the customer rep told me.
Use a rigid box with flaps intact
Remove any labels, hazardous materials indicators, and other previous shipment markings on the box that are no longer applicable
    Wrap all items separately
Separate the products from one another with a minimum of 2 inches of appropriate materials
    Use adequate cushioning material
Use strong tape designed for shipping
Do not use string or paper over-wrap

Thank you all for this information. I had a package break on me recently. Defiantly going to be use styrofoam shippers and going to bag the styrofoam and first box. I haven't received my call or letter yet... soon!

I've only lost one box and it was fed ex, but looking back it was my fault, I didn't pack it well enough.

This happened on my VERY first trade! I just started about 3 weeks ago. I read up on packing and even watched a couple of videos. However, they were on shipping bottles, not growlers. My trade was for 2x 32oz growlers. I thought I packed them really well. Taped the swingtop caps tight too...or so I thought. Apparently the package was leaking at the door during delivery. The receiving trader wanted to accept, but UPS would not let him. Still not quite sure exactly what happened as the content was discarded by UPS.

What I didn't do was put everything into a trash bag because I thought I packed it so well, not thing will happen. Every since then, each shipment has a couple of trash bags around the inside, either outside of the inside box or around the bottle shipper. I'm up to 7 trades now and so far so good. I'm just glad it happened right off the bat so I would learn to be even better.

Oh, no letter or call so far from UPS.

This happened to me, for the first time today. I pack all my boxes the same and never had an issue... But it doesn't matter once it happens. I received the same update on my tracking, as above, "Damage... Blah blah." I'm curious though, have all of your cases happened while in transit, or when "Out For Delivery?"

My package went through 5 transit stations once leaving the UPS store with no apparent issue. However, the package went out yesterday at 6am for delivery. It never made it. This morning there was an update at 9am stating the package was damaged and all of it was discarded. Interesting to me I guess that it was damaged AFTER going out for delivery.

I'm still learning the nuances of BA speak. Just outta curiosity, what is meant by 2012'er? I signed up in 2012, so I guess I'm one. I gotta know . . . I can take it. I swear I can.
