But doesn't the store owner have the right to be an asshole?

In the midst of all of the american/anti-american comments, I didn't see this point:

I won't waste my time on 1 bottle if it comes in a 6 pack. I'm definitely fine with 2 bottle limits if that is what the store wants to do, with the caveat that they aren't just doing it to jack up the price.

The Oracle in South Bend lasted a couple of WEEKS at multiple stores, at a 2 bottle limit. The price on the bottles were anywhere between $3.50-$4. Seems high for something that took weeks to sell two bottles at a time. I have a feeling though if they made the limit an entire 6 pack, with a price of $21-24, that might not have gone over as well.

THIS!!! However I'm ok w/ 2 bottle limits on very limited stuff. 1 bottle limits (at the brewery, not with distributed stuff because you can put in the effort and go to other stores) suck pretty hard, especially when a lot of the places (like HF) only have 1-2 dif. bottles available and most are 1-2 bottle limit, with the occasional 4-6 bottle limit on less rare stuff. I understand that they want as many people to get it as possible, but with trading this will tend to happen anyways because if I'm picking up 3-4 bottles of limited release HF stuff I'm going to be trading 1-2 and keeping 2 for myself anyways. It really makes it hard to justify driving 6.5 hours one way when the bottle limit on something you really want is only 1, that's for sure!

Would it be ok if they sold the 4 or 6 pack at X price and then posted the price for singles if you only wanted one? How about if they let you buy the remaining 3 or 5? let's say?

    1. Anyone who thinks not having an allowance for trades is promoting selfishness--no, you are being selfish! Let's be clear here--if you get an extra bottle that you trade away, that means that you actually are likely to get not one rare beer but at least two. That's ultimate in selfishness.
    2. Generally, one-bottle limit on items that are released as packs is questionable. It's like going to a restaurant that specializes in a particular dish and having to split that dish with other people.Say, they specialize in fresh grilled sardines, and the normally these come in threes. But they are seasonal and limited in supply. So one day you come for dinner and the waiter say, sorry, limited supplies on sardines, you only get one, so more customers should get some. And, while we are at it, because it's smaller quantity, we'll charge you more for it. Uhm... no!
    3. Ultimately, suppose we agree to split up multipacks. It makes sense to have a limit of 2--encourages sharing, if nothing else. Not that this is a strong incentive--I'm sure many people who get a limit of 2 bottles will drink them both by themselves. But, still, 2 is not unreasonable.
    4. If it's released as a single, I have no problem with 1-bottle limit.
    5. Let's not lose sight of the fact that limiting to single bottles not only allows to sell to more customers (not necessarily bringing in more customers!) but also to increase the profit margin because singles are generally sold at a higher markup (30-40% extra). So even if it does not bring in extra customers, it will improve the account, if only slightly. There's also a psychological game here--certainly you want to discourage "hunters" who only come in for that one item, raid the stock and leave. The question is, are people who are limited to that 1 rare bottle going to buy more than they would have had they got no rare bottles at all? I'm not convinced this is the case. So the only real benefit to the store is that extra mark-up on singles and the ephemeral hope that those 24 people will remember that they got a rare bottle at this store and will come back next time they are looking. Just not very convincing...

I keep trying to think of some way to explain to you how bad your analogy is for this situation, but I can't think of anything, so I'll just say it's a really bad analogy for this situation.

I think a 2 bottle limit is much more acceptable than 1 but I'd prefer to see it sold in packages of 4/6 unless the beer was intended to be sold as singles.

I'm not saying anybody should do anything. Whether I drink my whalez or trade them it's nobody's business anyway.

But the amount of necessary beer is precisely zero so we all buy an unnecessary amount of it :sunglasses:

I live 3-5 hours away from the nearest 2 great beer stores. Needless to say I can't run out for the next great release. I'd still rather see "ALL" the beer out on the shelf (not hid in the back) and be sold in 4 or 6 packs if that's the way it's packaged with maybe a one 4 or 6 pack limit. If I'm lucky enough to be there when something good comes out I'll buy it, if not, oh well. I'll buy something else. If I want something bad enough I'll find someone to trade with. Putting flame suit on, it goes with the "local entitlement" thought also, I think it's bull crap.

Since everyone is so concerned about having one to age, I think when a store gets a small amount of something that ages well, like a stout or barleywine or whatever, they should just hold onto it until the next year when it gets released again. Then everyone can get two and one will already be aged for you!

My neighborhood packy puts 1-bottle limits on all sorts of hard-to-get beers, including beers in 12 oz increments.

I don't trade at all, I don't cellar all that much, and I'm not inclined to put much effort into tracking down rarities, so it works out fine for me.

Liquor store I went to last weekend stated i could not buy 1 12oz, i had to buy more than 16oz of beer to buy individual bottles. Could have just been the store policy.
