i base my prices off what the brewery charges, which is a little more than stores...they charged 25 per bottle there...i bought a few from a bar near me for friends for 30 per bottle which IMO is better for me b/c i dont have to waste time driving aroudn from place to place.

Even if I had to drive I would probably pay 30 per. Its not an atrocious Mark up and ya its high but your never going to see lil again. If I'm debating about a price I all myself if ill see it again for lower and if its a beer that is worth drinking (as long as its not more than 30 to 40 percent up). Ive had a few regrets with passing up rare and King Henry years ago at regular price that im weary of passing up something for as little as 5 dollars more.

Well, bar prices... You can usually expect a beer to be marked up at least 2X at a bar. It's just not as shocking to us when we're paying $6 for a beer that costs $2 at a store in comparison to paying $42 for a beer that cost $21, even though the mark up percentage is higher for the lower cost beer.

That being said, I didn't buy the bottle. $42 is just too much for a beer.

With bar prices, you need to think more in terms of $$$/pour. A bottle of BMC in a store is 80 cents, but will be ~$4 at a restaurant. A bottle of Chimay is $5 at a store, but $9 at a restaurant. Bars like to get ~ $3-5 markup per pour. Of course, it will vary with higher end beers, but I wouldn't say it's always going to be 2x markup for the high dollar ones.

There's way too many variables to get into here... I just tried to keep it simple with the one variable of store cost.

At $200 a case and $17 a bottle I see why bars and stores mark it up that high. This may be a dumb question but does the brewery sending to the distributor set the price or does the distributor to the retailer set it? Bruery kegs for example like Bois was over $300 for a slim! Avery Samuels? Over $200 a slim. I understand how a bar would charge upwards of $15 for a snifter, unless all they wanna do is break even and in that case sell it for what the consumer thinks is reasonable.

The distributor sets the price and allocation. a brewery can request a price or allocation but ultimately once the distributor has the beer they take whatever markup they want and charge as much as they want to.

$42 per is easily the lowest I've seen in Miami. WOB and Abraxas are both $45+. Since its $27+ retail at non-TW, is this really a surprise? LoKal is actually the under on this one.

The Lokal is the shit. I didn't want to spend $42 on a beer so I passed on Life is Like, but at this moment I am drinking another CCB stout which they just put on a keg of...

The last 3 I scored weren't on shelves, they were on a special request basis. Anyone could buy them if they knew to ask, but they weren't advertised as being available at all.

I was lucky enough to spot some on the shelf at whole foods as the beer guy was loading it... grabbed a couple... wish i grabbed more. They had no limit. Sold out fast, as expected.

It usually works that way. Some people may find it surprising, but there are very few hard core beer geeks willing to fork over hundreds of dollars for every $20-25 release out there.

Hell, even with Zhukov we saw it. The initial wave sold out in 1 day, then the next wave came in and you could get it easily. Tampa area seems to have maybe a few hundred or so beer geeks who chase around every release, but outside of that most are fine with getting a bottle or 2 if it is on the shelf when they go beer shopping.
