I'm taking a road trip pretty soon- Rochester to Peekskill Brewing. I am driving from Peekskill Brewing to Albany after to visit some family. I want to stop at some cool bottle shops and beer stores on the drive there- does anybody have some suggestions? The first leg of the trip takes me Rochester-Syracuse-Cortland-Binghamton-Middletown to Peekskill Brewing- then the second leg takes me north to Albany, making stops in New Paltz, Poughkeepsie, and Kingston possible. Thanks for the suggestions in advance!

Halftime in Poughkeepsie/Rt-9 is worth the stop just because of quantity. There are some other decent shops in Hyde Park/Kingston/New Paltz but nothing on par with them (in my opinion). I haven't been to Beer World in New Windsor or Catskill so cant weigh in on whether they are worth it.

Would you say Half Time is the best for limited releases? I'm looking for interesting stuff I've never seen before.

Add half an hour to your trip and head to DeCicco's in Brewster? I haven't been in there yet, but many people tell me it's the sh!t.

DeCiccos in Brewster is great too good call. Forgot them. Worth a trip.

Halftime gets their share of limited stuff but they are the only game in town so it doesn't last long. Always check behind the register. They keep a lot of the Bruery, and other limiteds like Stone Enjoy By, Cascade (when they get it), Fantome etc there due to limits per customer. I was there this week and nothing back there was really limited or rare minus perhaps Mango Magnifico by Founders.

Since you are already planning on hitting Poughkeepsie, take advantage of the opportunity and go to Half Time even if they might not have the limited stuff you are after. You can always grab an import there if you want "interesting stuff you've never seen before." You can look through their website to get an idea of what they have.

DeCicco's Brewster is basically on the way from Peekskill to Albany. Yes it is a bit east of the most direct route, but well worth your time.

Depending on when you going through Middletown, you may want to stop at Rushing Duck. It's just a few minutes from there. Another young brewery that is making some really good beers. But they are only open on Fridays and Saturdays

Oliver's in Albany has a great selection as well, also their sister store, Westmere Beverage.

Decicco's Aardsley isn't to be forgotten.
Finger Lakes Beverage Center in Ithaca is certainly worth checking out.
If in Binghamton, check for Sam the Beer Man

This may seem like a dumb question- so bear with me- but what's the best way to ask about stuff "behind the register?" I don't want to seem awkward (that might be inevitable, knowing me), but I just want to know the best way to ask.

"Do you have any limited stuff not out on the shelves?"

I get what you are saying. They have stuff behind registers BUT on shelves in full view--not meant to be hidden just meant to control how many one can buy--so it's nothing you cant ask for, they just may tell you there is a 1 or 2 bottle limit (in some cases more but it may be something like Bourbon County or Nugget Nectar (in season) that they are just kind of "showcasing" or isn't something someone can grab 2 cases of and walk out). The people who work there are very helpful so I'd feel free to ask what so-and-so bottle is, limits, price etc.--they aren't hiding it just trying to avoid people grabbing it all up. I'm not in tight enough with any of them to know whether they have a secret-secret stash. They seem very up front about what is in stock etc. Hope this helps

When I was there (Halftime) about two weeks ago they did not have any enjoy by out but I asked the guy if they had any and he went in the back and got me some. So it's always worth asking what else they may have lurking that's not out.

Thanks for your help- can't wait to check this place out. I'd like to find Bourbon County somewhere- never seen it in stores, only had a few times on tap in Rochester, but I doubt I'll find it.

yeah its not out yet. there is a Beverage place in Hyde park NY that still had last years but I can't guarantee its still there--it was a few weeks ago and i think it was just (1) 4 pack. I haven't been there since to confirm. If you are just driving around Dutchess County it's called Park Beverage. It's a nice spot but you won't find anything there you cant get at Halftime. I wouldn't go out of my way.
