    All,

My buddy and I will be traveling from Wisconsin to Columbus, Ohio in a few weeks. I was wondering what some good places (on the way to Columbus and/or in Columbus) that have a good selection of craft beer and have great food as well. They don't necessarily have to be a brewpub but would be highly considered. (Perhaps beer that isn't distributed?)

If you don't mind, list the name of the place and what you like about it.

    Thanks a bunch, Prost!

What dates will you be in town? There is a "Mini Real Ale Festival" sponsored by Barley's May 12th from 1 - 4.

Unfortunately not until the weekend after. We'll be busy for most of the time but thought I'd see if anyone had any strong suggestions. Thanks for the reply though! Cheers!

If you could only go to one place I'd say stop by Columbus Brewing Company. Good food and great beer and a pleasing atmosphere. Plus, I'm pretty sure they always have Bodhi on draft which is about the best beer that Columbus area breweries have to offer.

Bottle shops to check out while here -
    Weilands
    Andersons
    Kenny Road market
    Palmers
    Pace high
    Barrel and bottle
All the above bottle shops are top notch and carry great selections of craft beers -
if you can't find it in any of those places ..odd's are you won't find it

If 'on the way' to Columbus means traveling thru NW Indiana then it's an absolute no-brainer to stop at Three Floyds and enjoy that experience.

I've been to Three Floyds before and was considering it as an option if time permits. Thanks to you guys for the input! I wish the trip wasn't so time limited, I would love to head up to Hoppin' Frog, their beers are fantastic. Anyways, Cheers!

You left off From the Vine for some reason...

I'm being both serious and seriously pointing a knowing finger, lol...

FWIW Hoppin' Frog does not offer beer to drink on premise so anything they make you can buy in most good shops around town.

If you want beer and food I suggest Winking Lizard -cheap food (great wings), large selection. BJ's Brewhouse is a chain but their beer is decent and the food is great. We also have a Gordon Biersch in town. Barley's supposedly has great BBQ (I haven't eaten there in a long time).

The food at Columbus Brewing Co isn't bad, but overpriced. They are not a true brewpub (not owned by the brewery). That said, I'd still stop by, even if for a growler fill.

Best bar in town is Bodega (52 drafts) and their food has been improving immensely lately. Try to swing by for happy hour (1/2 off drafts).

As I always try to point out to people traveling - the directory is a wealth of information, it'll point you in the right direction.

Good call on Winking Lizard, and Mellow Mushroom is also good for craft beer and pizza.

Bodega gets crazy crowded, the best time to go is early afternoon. Surly Girl Saloon (a few blocks north of Bodega) has good taps and food without the crowd.

From the Vine is a drive for me - round trip is like 60 miles , I used to go there till I was told I didn't frequent it enough to be worthy of KBS from them .."No big deal ..Saves me gas money and other bottle shops don't mind my money..Or saving special release beers for me ..I ended up getting KBS regardless and didn't have to buy two four packs of breakfast stout in order to get it ..

Ask for a shop to set bottles aside for you, then flake out on buying them enough times and they'll all refuse to sell you limited stuff. Also, probably not a great idea to brag to a shop owner that you can't buy the beer they saved you because you blew all your money at a competitor.

Either way I get it: FTV is a drive for me too. But if it's 60 miles round trip to go there, then it can't be less than 48-50 to go somewhere like Weilands or Palmers. Just isn't that compelling of an argument...

I agree with Winking Lizard. Great Columbus-Cleveland Chain that is focused on good beer and food (and not too pricey).

Personally one of my favorite Columbus spots (more so for food then beer) is Schmidt's Sausage Haus. They have some local micro brews and their food was featured on Man vs. Food. Sometimes hard to get a table, but worth the wait. cheers.

Who "flaked out" ? - FYI I didn't buy Hopslam , It was the only thing I didn't buy that was being held for me because my wife bought a case for me while I was at work ("not my fault "and I was courteous enough to call and tell them what happened and they said 'no worries' apparently they held a grudge and if that's the case - "Oh Well" I'm not losing any sleep.. trust me..) , other than that one time I picked everything up that was being held for me, I don't know why you are defending them over me when apparently you don't have all the facts..I don't have a problem with them other than the fact I was pretty much told to go fuck myself by them..(in a matter of speaking)..

Weilands is about 35 round trip from where I live and Palmers is a couple of blocks closer and I have never had a issue with either place and when I'm at work and drive there at lunch they are even closer to me..this is a huge city and there are alot of bottle shops , me visiting one and not another isn't going to hurt anyone's business..

oh and if I can't get it in this city ..I'll trade for it ..

    Cheers !

BTW - sorry to the Op for this back and forth banter - I had a finger pointed at me and had to tell my side of the story..

Why did you have Hopslam held for you? There are still cases of that sitting around. If I've learned anything so far, it would be buy what you see, not a logical beer that might be there. There will always be someone that does a better job playing the game. The less effort required to get a beer always makes for a better experience to me, all the way from the wallet to the belly.

There are two sides to every story so I will just state that I do have "all the facts" as presented from the other side. This apparently was an ongoing thing (not just happening over one bottle release).

I'm merely defending a store that has taken care of me and the community as well (weekly tastings for cheap and also has allowed us to have very large group bottle shares there numerous times). I frankly don't care where you shop, but I do get annoyed when people do shady things. Why is it even my business? I was shut out of CBS because I was out of town the week leading up the the release and flew in around noon. It was sold out hours earlier. I tried to get on the list at FTV much earlier but it was already full (one of the people was you). I don't care so much that I missed out as the fact that not everyone who was on the list is willing to support the store that did them a huge favor.

I can't always afford to make the 135 mile drive from Westerville to FTV vs the 10 mile drive to Kenny Rd Market, but I do try to make it out there whenever possible because they are always willing to hold things for me and hold tastings, etc. Basically I try to take care of the businesses that take care of me.

I also don't get what the trading reference is about other than trying to brag. But nice try :sunglasses:

Really Chris I don't care , sorry you didn't get any CBS .
If you want to blame me ..Fine - but remember I didn't sell it to myself and I had to buy two other Founders four packs just to be able to buy the CBS ..that was the deal ..I wonder if every patron of the place had to do the same - it wasn't exactly cheap...

As far as the haul picture- it wasn't bragging - it was stating that if no bottle shop in this city wants to sell me some KBS - I can still get it ..
