I'm going to spend Oct 19-22 in Denver. While I'm there I'll be trying some locally available beer. And will also be buying some to send back to Texas with me. Can anyone recommend some quality and popular beers to try while I'm there? I'll make a trip to Argonauts, I'm sure. Also - does Russian River have a Pliny The Elder release schedule? What are the chances of finding some fresh Pliny that week?

    Thanks!

Pliny should be coming to the liquor stores in Fort Collins tomorrow, and lately it's been coming every 6-8 weeks. Can't say when it'll be on tap anywhere, though I know it was just tapped at The Mayor in Fort Collins. RR doesn't have a release schedule for Pliny. I'm guessing Denver is on the same schedule as Fort Collins.

I would stop by Great Divide, though you can get their stuff in Texas. Be sure to visit Crooked Stave - you definitely can't get that in Texas. Though Funkwerks is in Fort Collins, I recommend picking up at least their Saison in the liquor store.

Oh, and definitely try some stuff from Odell. I don't know what styles you like so I really can't make any recommendations - they have lots of great stuff. Myrcenary (double IPA) is awesome.

I second Great Divide. All of their stuff has this sort of sweet flavor profile I really like, and they have a good spread of year-round brews. The large-format Avery stuff is really good; Salvation tripel, Reverend quad, Dictator Series - all very good. Someone also mentioned Funkwerks and their Saison is good, but I'd recommend the Tropic King. Upslope is all cans and their IPA, brown, and tripel are all good (and under rated, in my opinion). Also try to get some Modus Hoperandi from Ska Brewing. If you're going to go Odell, I'd skip their basic stuff and just go for the Myrcenary DIPA, but their flagship 90 Schilling scotch ale is really decent, as is their regular IPA. I've seen Dry Dock everywhere, but I've been pretty consistently underwhelmed by their standard offerings, as well as some of their specialty bombers, and Breckenridge has this funky/metallic flavor profile across the board that I do not like. Just throwing that out there. Also don't care for Left Hand, but their Milk Stout is good, just make sure you get the nitro. I don't imagine you have any problems getting New Belgium, but as far as they go I'd recommend the Abbey, Trippel, and the Rampant DIPA (if only to say you've had it...oh, and it's like 8-something ABV in a $9 six pack). Hope you enjoy your visit.

I wouldn't waste money on this, however, you can get it for free at the Coors brewery in Golden. Apparently they now have a short tour where you can go straight to the tap room and bypass the rest of the brewery.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check into all of those suggested. As for what I like - I really enjoy a heavy hopped IPA. I had a 6 week old Pliny that was great, but I hear how different a fresh one tastes so I was hoping I'd get lucky while I'm there. But anything similar would be great. I also love a great red ale, tripel, quad, amber. Most anything, really. Great Divide looks really good. I don't recall having seen them in my part of Texas (Houston area). We also plan on hitting a few brewery tours while we're in town (anyone tried Banjo Billy's or Brews Cruise??).

Renegade cans some solid IPAs. Elevations is worth picking up, False Summit is a very solid quad from them. Trinity makes some good beers.

As a has been recommended already, Odell IPA, Myrcenary IIPA, and St. Lupulin XPA for your hop fix. Backcountry Pale Ale is also great.

For a Red, Crazy Mountain's Boohai Red is good. I also really enjoy their Horseshoes & Grenades ESB. And Odell's 90 Schilling can probably land in this terriitory too and is solid.

Elevation's False Summit Quad as also mentioned is worth a shot.

Go to Falling Rock Taproom, great selection and when I was there they had Pliny on tap.
Great Divide is a good tour and great beer.
River North is a 5 minute walk from Great Divide and makes good beer, the J. Marie Saison was great and the Hoppenberg Principle is a nice DIPA.
Renegade makes great beer and has a cool taproom that plays great music.
TRVE is a great blackmetal brewery mintues from Renegade with really tasty brews.

I am also from Texas and spent a week in CO last month, let me know if you want more tips but the CO guys can give you more than me. Search the forum, there are 10+ threads in the last month about this same thing.

You know you live in a great spot for beer when you go to the bar, see Pliny on the menu, and have no guilt over passing over it for something else.

(And the New Belgium La Terroir I grabbed instead, outstanding stuff. It deserves all the love this board has thrown its way. I liked it more than Love or La Folie, both great beers themselves.)

Not a great chance to find Pliny in bottles unless you call around to all of the liquor stores.

    Favorite local beers:
    Elevation - False summit quad
Avery - Samael's oak aged ale, Uncle Jacob's stout, rumpkin barrel aged pumpkin
Great Divide - oak aged yeti imperial stout
River North - Hoppenberg uncertainty principle belgian dipa (also check their website to see if they release a new special release beer)
    Upslope - pumpkin ale
Oskar blues - ten fidy imperial stout, old chub scotch ale
    Odell - cutthrout porter

I believe the Upslope pumpkin is pouring at the Flatirons taphouse now, and the cans are supposed to be available 10/1. Rumpkin release is 9/22 if you want to line up at the brewery for some. I've only seen it in a liquor store once and it was like $17 for a 12oz bottle and I said "No thanks."

I think I've seen all the others here and there recently except False Summit and Hoppenberg I've not heard of.
