  2. No, the benefits are minor/non-existent and it's just not fair to the user's thread.

And even if you were to look up a beer like The Abyss, you'd see that it is #14 overall and there are very few bad reviews (less than 25 reviews under 3.5, with over 1400 review) Someone new would look at that info and think that a 2009 Abyss would be a great get. Which also comes back to people that say not to review infected beers. I still find it crazy how few bad 2009 Abyss reviews there actually are.

To be fair, i've had 5 or 6 '09 Abyss's and never had an infected one. This isn't one of those cases where every beer is infected, very hit or miss.

Takes NOOBS a long time to figure it out???? MOST people don't have it figured out. That's why threadshitting EXISTS. Because trade value is subjective, people have different opinions on things (i.e. they don't agree over value), and thus feel the need to express such whenever they deem the situation warrants. That's one of the big issues. It's a n00b problem suffered by veteran traders.

I see what you mean about making it less fun, but what also makes trading less fun is everyone trying to only maximize returns. I don't even look at eBay (though I'm not against it in principle) but I would agree that it is not a great barometer for beer traders to user.

I think most of us would agree that "value" is subjective, but I also think there a general consensus among seasoned traders that there's a range of beers that seem like a reasonable trade offer for a given beer. When more offers than not are offering something of a lower tier for something of a higher tier, and most of these offers are by relative noobs, I think we have a bit of a problem on our hands.

I mostly agree....and unfortunately, most of the time I think they DO know that value is subjective, but they are just trying to boost the trade value of a specific beer that they also have.

Exactly. It's far from perfect, but it's all we have, dammit!

My range has always been wider than what the consensus is, which is why I find 'This probably won't get done' to be annoying.

I agree with this. Not only that, but what's the FIRST thing a prospective trader does when he reads an ISO/FT that seems a bit off? HE SENDS A COUNTER OFFER. So...even THEN...who gives a flying fuck if the OP's offer seems out of whack? I'm CERTAIN someone else can come back with a counter, and two individuals can have a discussion towards working something out. I can't tell you how many trades I've done that have looked NOTHING like what was originally proposed in an ISO/FT. So...again...who gives a fuck if it can or cannot be done. It doesn't mean a trade can't be done.

Never got an alert about this response, so pardon my tardiness.

As with all things, how a product is used determines its value, both detrimental and positivel. In the situation I mused about with a blog, the idea would be for the peer-review to dig out the potential blind spots and homerism of the author. Also, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting a write up of trade values, but more of a constant commentary on the state of trading and the kinds of things to get newbies up to speed. A one stop shop to find out what's new, what's hard to get, and the like. It's a half-formed idea, I admit, but maybe someone was looking for an idea. *shrugs*

As for usefulness or necessity, sometimes it's enough to fill a niche and have some fun doing it.

Well, then I would submit that you're not seasoned enough. Might I suggest some Lawry's or Mrs. Dash if you have high blood pressure.

The idea sounds pretty harmless to me. Hell, even if all you do is set up something where people can submit trades then view the aggregate results it could be useful.

(So I'm thinking some kind of form where you put in what you traded, with whom, and what you got for it, so if you traded a Beatification for a Kate with user funny_name then you'd tell it that, then whoever's running it would contact funny_name to make sure it actually happened. The someone else can go to the site, look up Beatification or Kate and see that the trade happened.)

Unfortunately, what's to stop a couple people from staging trades that don't actually exist, for the purposes of making the trade appear viable to others? You'd be aggregating results off hear-say.

Normally considered very liberal, only BA it seems can make me seem as if I'm the ultimate libertarian. Talk about a nanny state.
