I just finished brewing this recipe (that I've been talking about for a bit in other threads)

    Recipe:
Mash at 155 for 1 hour
    I will batch sparge
    12.75 lbs 2 row
    7 oz Caramel 60L
    4 oz Aromatic malt
    1 oz Chocolate Malt

    Whirlfloc Tablet @ 15 min
    8oz candi sugar @ 10min
    8oz light brown sugar @ 10min

    Hops
    2oz Styrian Golding @ 60min
    2/3oz Styrian Golding @ 15min (I'll add the other 1/3oz probably at 45)
    1/2oz Czech Saaz @ 3min (I'll add the other 1/2oz probably at 30)

    Yeast= WLP005 British Ale

Toward the end of the counterflow chilling I took a small glass to taste. I can't upload a photo but it is a clear amber liquid with a cloudy ball that looks almost like foam floating in the very center. What the heck is going on? COuld this be the cause of the brown and candi sugar? Especially since it was at the end of the chilling phase?

Without a picture, my guess would be hot or cold break material.

If that is what it is, what could occur? Also, how do you upload a photo?

    Nothing really. It's normal.

You can't upload to BA. You have to hang it somewhere else on the web and link to there.

Probably break material like VM said.. It's no big deal. Normal.

Nothing bad will happen because of this. Best to keep as much of it out of fermentor as possible (to avoid some unintended flavors), but what amount that does get in will fall out after fermentation. You will rack off of it.

You can filter it out pretty easily with a screen prior to transferring to the fermenter.

If you strain most of the water out of it, it kinda tastes like tofu. Source: I ate it once.

Ewww. Hey, what ever happened to the guy who drank a vial of yeast? His name was something like "Something"-OfDeath (with 'Something' replaced with something else).

This is the guy - http://beeradvocate.com/community/members/tetsuyaofdeath.357307/ Hasn't posted since the site switch.

He was also the guy that put pancakes in his fermenter and bottled his homebrew in malt liquor 40s. We need more crazy shit like that in this forum.

    (my memory is embarrassing sometimes)

I recall the one guy who gave hop pellets to his roommate's pet rabbit and the thing shit all over their apartment.

It's just one of the issues regarding use of an inline chiller, cold break material precipitates in the chiller. It's really best to form cold break quickly, but when it does, you create smaller fluffier precipitants like snow in very cold weather. Some commercial breweries have a whirlpool vessel made for clearing cooled wort of cold break material. Most home brewers (who use couterflow chillers) just leave it. Few try to filter cold break material when using a couterflow chiller. It doesn't filter easily because it is so fluffy. If you are particularly concerned about it you can rack once it settles. You could also try using a hop back after the chiller, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the hop back (which is typically placed before the chiller).
