isn't City Island contract brewed? or did they start brewing themselves recently?

Not sure, they are part of the NYC craft brewers guild for whatever that's worth

Did anyone else read this and say to themselves....they must be just rattling off 10 breweries, not actually ranking them in THAT order.

EDIT: ...and since when was Wilkes Barre PA considered NYC-ish....right, Sixpoint???

I support this top 3. Did you have Rushing Duck Planet Funkotron yet? They had it at Decicco's this week when I stopped in.

I'm the only one of my group who hasn't had it yet, didn't make it to RD this past weekend, especially as I am on Doxycycline and can only drink 4 oz. a day. Everyone said it is good but could be a bit tarter and the brett could be a little more developed. Hope to try it, and the next two in that series also.

What did you think of it?

I'd swap Peekskill and Greenport Harbor, add Port Jeff and Singlecut into the mix, relegate Newburgh to the back.
I've yet to see any Rushing Duck in the city.

Awesome summer beer IMO. It was tart enough for me, but that's my personal preference.

Completely agree with ya here. I don't know who wrote the article but all I was thinking while reading it was: "there is zero chance this person has consumed beers from each of these breweries."

Barrier has put out some nice beers but they are not #1. CL is living on "past credibility" IMO and I don't think I would have them in the top 5. Rushing Duck should be in the top 3 IMO. Planet Funkotron was the first "miss" I have had from them. Their BA Barleywine was excellent. I am not as big of a Peekskill Brewery fan as some in the area. I think it has more to do with my expectations for them after Jeff came over and those expectations have not been met on a regular basis. Newburgh has yet to put anything out that impressed me. If you want to put them on the list they should be #10 at best. Sixpoint is a brewery that drives me crazy. I have seen what they can do when the brew the beers for Beer for Beasts. They are excellent brews that push the limits. Yet they send out sub-par beers in cans the rest of the year. They would be #9 on a list for me. If they released the beers they make for Beer for Beasts they would be top 3. Bronx Brewery has put out some excellent under the radar beers. Their BA Pale Ale was fantastic. They are probably the closest to the correct ranking. Kelso's Industrial IPA is sublime and might be one of my favorite IIPAs. Beyond that I haven't had anything from them noteworthy. #8 for me. Brooklyn makes some exceptional beers as well. They are in the right area as well.

my current list based solely on the breweries on this list:
    10. Newburgh
    9. Sixpoint
    8. Kelso
    7. Bronx Brewing
    6. Captain Lawrence
    5. Barrier
    4. Peekskill
    3. Brooklyn
    2. Greenport Harbor
    1. Rushing Duck

A couple breweries in the area that I would include and take some of these off:
Sloop (getting a bit too far away from the NYC area would be my guess), Port Jefferson, Spider Bite (not being brewed in the NYC area yet so I can see why it was left off.)

-Did you really say Spiderbite? For that matter, let's include Montauk Brewing on this list too, since both are brewed @ Butternuts.

Relax buddy, I said they've made a good stout or two...looking at everyone's lists it's obviously hard to come up with a great top 10 right around NYC. I thought they were about 50-60 mins outside NY; didn't know they brewed at Butternuts.

haha i'm sorry i am just very intolerant of contract breweries, when they pretend they make their own beer. Like Sixpoint. They're the worst. And they lie, right on the cans. Illegal. Sorry.
Nothing against breweries who contract, when there is transparency... it can even be embraced. I will actually drink Fire Island now because despite leading people to believe there was a brewery in Ocean Beach, they proudly say that Phil is making their beers at 2 Roads. Now I respect the liquid, and it has improved vastly. Still a marketing company, but I look at it as 2 Roads Light.

TRUTH. Except Kelso is ridden with diacetyl 50% of the time.

Sixpoint's cans say "Brewed and Canned by Sixpoint Brewery, Brooklyn, NY" not "at" or "in" and, deceptive as it is, it is not illegal since it meets the TTB's regulation:

This is the regulation that allows AB, MC and Yuengling's labeling to say only "St. Louis", "Golden, CO" "Milwaukee" or "Pottsville, PA" even though the beer might come from another of those companies' breweries.

Over the years most craft brewers who contract have not used the above technicality even when they could and, certainly, given the number of times it comes up for Sixpoint's labeling the "appropriate TTB officer" should have disapproved their labeling by now - but there is no way that I've seen on the TTB site to make a consumer complaint and I doesn't appear that the TTB officers reads the BA forum.

As far as the top 10, the only ones I've had stuff from is Rushing Duck (loved it), captain lawrence (pretty good), Brooklyn (good stuff, feels a little mass produced to me) and Six Point (underwhelmed, Apollo was one of the worst beers I have ever had). Can'w wait to try Peekskill. They are next on my list.

Can we put NJ breweries on here since Kane Brewing is as close to NYC as some of the others being mentioned?
