I know that response is all the rage when someone expresses they'd like things to go differently than the way they are...but really, it's just what a lot of people use as a response when they really don't have anything meaningful to say or otherwise have nothing else to offer up to the conversation.

You can call it entitlement, or whatever other catchy little inciting word you want...but the fact is people voice their opinion with their wallets. Stuff like this doesn't make me the least bit inclined to drive an hour and a half each way, and spend money on the gas necessary to make such a trip, so I can get there and find out what I'm there to enjoy isn't available because someone else was an idiot. Don't treat me like some second rate citizen because someone else has zero common decency. I live in an area with some pretty good beer. If I'm traveling to the Harrisburg area for beer, rest assured it's for things that aren't available here. Take those away, and I'll just spend my money elsewhere. No biggie.

Fine, you want more of a response? If you know what Al has gone through to his establishment to this place you would understand why he is punishing you. One guy got caught. The worry is the other 5 that didn't. What this amounts to is each of you need to police your own.

About three months after Pizza Boy opened Al (and a very drunk stormking47) were sleeping on my couches because Al was visiting Michigan breweries to learn. You all simply do not grasp the amount of learning and effort his has put in, and I for one am happy he is going to do something decisive to make sure his "customers" don't ruin it for him.

I respect that anyone that's opened such a place has gone through a lot. And it doesn't make him punshing me for shit I didn't do, any more palatable. It doesn't make it any more palatable either that he worry's (but doesn't know) that 5 others could have. Is we waiting for apologies from the people he doesn't even know may have taken beer off premise, too?

Each of us need to police our own? Oh. I see. We're the rat squad, yeah? Rats are nearly as bad as the perpetrators.

I find it offensive that you say that I or anyone else doesn't understand the effort required to achieve our goals in life. We all have obstacles. We all bleed, sweat, and shed tears somewhere along the way.

He doesn't have customers. He has guests. People that come visit. People that come visit from well outside their neighborhood. People that bypass other wonderful breweries just to visit his. People that are attempting to spend their hard earned loot at his establishment, instead of another. And when you tell them to essentially fuck off because someone else was a moron...it quite frankly doesn't sit well. All too easy to spend the money elsewhere. Now...if you don't CARE that I spend my money elsewhere than at your place of business, well...I'm not sure what to say about that.

I appreciate those of you who are local to Al and otherwise support him or have relationships with him. I respect you stepping up to the plate to defend his actions. But you're just going to have to accept that I, and likely many more...simply don't share your opinion on this.

    Cheers.

I can't speak for Al, but if you think of yourself as a visitor to the brewery, I for one would be pissed I had to pay. You are a customer, in a capitalist enterprise. Al opened Pizza Boy because he likes beer. He also opened it because he likes money. Show me one brewer/owner that doesn't worry about the bottom line and I will show you a failed brewery.

If his concern is his business's bottom line, then he is going about it all wrong. He is pissing off tons of paying customers who may not travel there because the sours aren't available. He is also pissing off customers who show up, see the beers on the menu, and order them only to be told that they "aren't selling them right now."

I know nothing about Pizza Boy other than what's in this thread, but in general the breweries I've been to who value money as much as beer are mediocre at best, and many are down right bland and horrible. Have a passion for beer, make good beer, have a decent business plan, and the money will come. This doesn't apply to just beer, either.

Long term, if I drove a long ass way for something and found out it was advertised, but not available for something like this, I wouldn't go back. At least stop advertising them as available. I also think this is very childish and silly, if the reason is actually some guy capping the bottle. Why not just pour out the bottles and serve the glasses? Punishing people for someone else's actions is mind boggling when it's something that almost no one else would even contemplate. If it's something that's getting to be a widespread problem, I could see it.

That's the problem, it is fast becoming one.

Lets not even pretend like this is the first time this has happened. I have personally drank two bottles of these sours while in Vermont...and I sure didn't bring them with me. I also had a guy brag to me that he had three bottles of Permasmile in has cellar at home. When I asked him how exactly he pulled that off he stated that he had just recapped the bottles and taken them home. He then proceeded to say a whole bunch of unflattering things about Al for not letting him just buy them so he wouldn't have to do such shady things. Also, all three sours were recently reviewed on the other site from "growlers," consumed at a tasting in Chicago. Most of the reviews from that tasting have since been removed yet two remain. There have also been checkins from all over the country on Untappd as well. Simply put, there are WAY more of these things floating around than there should be. This incident was more of a culmination of months of frustration. Hell, someone even suggested doing this exact situation in this thread not even two months ago...

Could it have been handled in a different manner? Absolutely. However, last time I checked it was his beer, not ours, so he can do whatever he wants with it. Besides, it's not like they wont be for sale in the future, because they will be. In the meantime I will just order one of the other hundred or so beers he has on-tap.

In that case, there's still no reason to advertise them as available, or could serve them in glasses. Pouring your glasses into a secret growler you have hidden away would leave a much worse beer. Also, the fact this is even happening is bullshit. Are beer geeks really getting that shady and desperate? I guess I give people too much credit.

Too much entertainment! Did everyone cry this much when Russian River stopped filling Pliny the Younger growlers because people sold them on ebay? Or that Toronado has on site bottles as well?

Unfortunately, yes, there are a lot of really sad people out there. They think it's their right to take the beer out of the brewery even though it's on premise only. These people are probably shitting themselves with glee because of the great beers they can trade for them since they are so rare. It's incredibly sad and just baffles me that people like this exist.

Uh what? No one has complained in this thread about the on premise only as far as I can tell. Mostly people are upset they can't drink them on site at the moment.

edit: And honestly? I bet if Russian River turned Pliny the Younger into draft only now you'd have a 20 page thread about it and how stupid they are and what a bad business decision it is. But they did it 2+ years ago.

Exactly, but they did it 2 years ago and everyone has moved on & people still drink their beer. I was comparing Pizza Boy's on site to Totonados for Cable Car and others. You just deal with it. There are still sours on draft at Pizza Boy, everyone is just whining about a business man doing what he feels is right. Deal with it!

I'm still confused why the bartenders can't just pour the beer into glasses and pitch the bottle?

Of course, if you're going to solo it then this could present some issues but...

Wouldn't stop people from pouring those glasses into a bottle they brought themselves.

The problem is... that they aren't even available for onsite consumption right now. Nobody was complaining about when it was. They are complaining about the beer not being available period.
