Curious to hear your thoughts on the best hoppy beers in NC.

For me, the best regularly available stuff is Sculpin (cans), All Day IPA (cans), and Double Trouble.

For the rarer stuff, Hopslam Oracle, and Enjoy By. Oh and Wicked Weed Freak (rare if you don't live in Asheville).

I wonder if I'm missing some gem?

Foothills Jade fits the bill perfectly to my taste. Bottles somewhere soon I hope.

Beer Study in Carrboro did another all NC IPA tasting the other day and the standout for me was Hop Drop and Roll by Noda. I found the others pretty underwhelming, but I am fighting a summer cold and seem to have lost my sense of smell for the most part.

I like my IPAs and DIPAs to be absolutely bursting with hop aroma and hop flavor but balanced on the bitterness. If you're like me, then there are likely three keys to this kind of a beer: freshness, freshness, and freshness. Learn to read bottled on dates, especially on Ballast Point beers. I love those guys, but the fact is their beer is expensive and it may sit on the shelf. Fresh Sculpin is a wonderful thing. Old Sculpin is a $15 six pack of amber ale. Bells Oracle is too bitter for my taste.

For beers available in NC, I like: Green Flash West Coast IPA and Imperial IPA, anything hoppy and pale from Lagunitas (and they're priced right, too), especially Lil' Sumpin Sumpin and one of the best hoppy beers of the year, Lagunitas Sucks, Uinta Hop Notch, Southern Tier 2X IPA can be good when it's fresh...

Those and G'Knight are great if you can find them fresh. I rarely seem them fresh though, which is sad considering the shit is brewed less than 150 miles from Charlotte. You're better off going with Dale's Pale Ale.

Is NoDa available in the Triangle area? I don't recall seeing it, but I probably wasn't looking.

Also, Sayson, I wasn't clear on how Sculpin cans are dated. I see numbers on the bottom, but I didn't know how to read them.

3C from Triple C has become my favorite IPA brewed in Charlotte.

Jade's a bit more austere and dry than Hoppyum- but very approachable, nonetheless. They are on to something very nice.

Beer Study in Chapel Hill usually picks up their bottles, and it wouldn't surprise me if he got their cans, which will be released later this month.

For some reason I always forget about this beer, but I totally agree, it is a very tasty IPA.

I'm pretty sure the numbers are a Julian date xxYYY where xx is the last two digits of the year and the YYY is the day of the year.

I have started to see more NoDa in the Triad as well as the Triangle - which makes me pretty happy since I really enjoy Hop, Drop, and Roll.

This does not seem to be a problem in Raleigh. Last spring we had Gubna a week after it was canned. I picked up Deviant Dales that was about three weeks old a couple of weeks ago.

I guess it just doesn't move around here. I did find relatively fresh Gubna when the first batch of that was brewed in NC earlier this year, but Deviant Dales and G'Knight are almost always 2 or 3 months old when I bother to check. Maybe I just miss the fresh shipments, but OB's stuff seems to sit on the shelf aside from Dale's Pale Ale.
