    Hi folks,

Six breweries across the world are giving a beer lover a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip around the world to visit each of the breweries. Apologies if this should not be posted in this forum, but I fathom a guess a lot of people here would be interested:

Meantime the best they can do for the UK? Don't get me wrong , it's an excellent brewery but the true glory of UK beer lies in its cask beers and Meantime to my knowledge only brews keg beer. I have had Meantime on cask but understood it to have been contract brewed.

Agreed on Belgium but not Germany. I feel like Germany has many great brewers, but they are held back by German beer purity laws. Only water, barley and hops takes away so many wonderful types of beer. Antartica is where its at always cold enough to drink any style.:grinning:

Uh, those laws are no longer a thing. Reinheitsgebot was lifted in 1988, iirc.

Have you actually been to Germany? They may not have the American styled Double Imperial Barrel Aged Coffee and Maple Infused DIPA's that we seem to require but you won't find better beer anywhere.

Then why haven't I ever heard of a good cherry beer (non sour) from Germany. I also think it's legacy lives on and German brewers (at least from what I've seen) tend to be less creative than say America or Belgium.

You've clearly never been to ,say, Bamberg then?
Within the Reinheitsgebot, which many brewers still adhere to , there is still enormous scope to brew dazzling beer. How many posters on BA decry the use of adjuncts ?
Don't confuse choice with quality. Neither ignore the drinking experience in old world brewing countries because it's on another level.

You don't go on a world beer tour with that mindset. You look to enjoy what the locals do best. Otherwise you might as well stay at home.

I have been to Germany actually, and Barrel aged especially with cherry and maple tends to be my favorite kind of beer. I'm not in love with DIPA's (almost all I've had I'd consider drainpours) except Heady. Again although repealed, I think the legacy of Reinheitsgebot lives on. As for finding better beer there's a ton of American and Belgian beer I'd choose over Germany. I'm not saying German beer is bad it's just not the best.

Mmmm...the Reinheitsgebot hasn't been required since being replaced by the Vorläufiges Biergesetz of 1993 which allows for other ingredients including yeast, different kinds of malt and sugar. And German breweries claim to follow the Reinheistgebot even when they obviously aren't, for example with wheat beers, because it's a good marketing tool.

Even so, there are plenty of tasty beer styles that don't require anything more than hops, malt, water and yeast, so that's hardly a good basis for judging beer.

Thanks for sharing. Too bad you can only enter via instagram.
And they skipped Belgium, Germany, and chose Victory for the US!?
Much better US breweries and Downington, PA (pop: ~8000) probably has nothing to do except Victory.

I was hoping that the title of this thread was one for us to suggest an ideal beer trip.....well, I will anyway.

I'd love to catch the bus/train from Scotland, to Ireland, to England, to France, to Germany and then to Belgium. Now that's a trip! I might have to bury my liver in Belgium and get a new one, but it would be worth it.

I mean, it'd be cool just to travel to all of those places for free and I'm sure you'd get some good beer, but I think they could do MUCH better with the selected breweries.

    Held back??
So they can't make crap like New Belgium Coconut Curry Hefeweizen?
German beers are great - they don't need to go down our road.

No need to worry about your liver, you would have drowned between Scotland and Ireland.

I am pretty sure we BA's could easily put together a better "fantasy" best beer trip...

While I'd love to go on such a trek (and I *do* think Victory is a good choice) - skipping Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, and all of central Europe is a very, very odd decision. Even just going with Amsterdam out of geographical convenience would have been okay.
