This beer is being released at the brewery on Thursday, Sept. 19th at 11 am. No info is given about the price, distribution, etc.

    From Facebook:

On September 19th, otherwise known as "International Talk Like a Pirate Day" we're releasing an ale fit for a buccaneer! You guessed it, Shipwreck Porter is back!

Bottles will be available to drink and purchase all day at the brewery and a beer dinner will follow that night.

Beer Dinner will feature Shipwreck Porter, XV, 3 year old Cereal Killer and London Porter. There will be a brewery tour at 6:00 and the dinner will start at 6:30.

Details for come on beer dinner menu and reservation details.

Thanks for the heads-up! I've tried some from the Cereal Killer series; they have been pretty good, but this one seems to be the best of the bunch.

Let's hope that they get it right this time, and this isn't like the BB Cereal Killer/Imperial Stout release in November December. The last batch was pretty incredible after a year.

    Shipwreck is always barrel aged.

I've always been a bit confused on this one. Can someone tell me if there is a difference between the red waxed bottles a few years ago and the regularly released Shipwreck, as both seem to be barrel aged?

I am not going to clear anything up with absolute facts but I will try to provide some insight based on past experience and limited knowledge.

My experience with the older vintages, the bombers, was rather underwhelming. I do not have any detailed notes to fall back on but nothing in the beer stood out. I was told by one of the senior employees at Arcadia that the first batch of the "new" Shipwreck was "forgotten" about in barrels and when it was pulled it had spent 22 months in bourbon oak. This extra maturation could be what distinguishes the old from the new and turns what was a forgettable beer into something special.

I think kzoobrew is right-on with his info. The old label shown above was only on the 22 oz. bombers (a size that is no longer produced), and the label on those bottles never said that the beer was aged in bourbon barrels, just oak barrels. However, I think the barrels were formerly used for bourbon, but the characteristics of the beer never screamed of that flavor.

When the 'new' Shipwreck was born (2008 or 2009?) the brewery switched to the 12 oz. format with a new label and the red waxed cap. The bourbon is certainly more pronounced in this version, and the beer is now exceptional.

Both the 22- and 12-oz. versions have always been made from a base Baltic Porter, and the brewery has named that beer as Balz Porter. This beer is occasionally on tap at the brewery, seemingly only when a new batch is brewed to start the aging process for another batch of Shipwreck. There is no such thing as a non-bourbon barrel aged version of Shipwreck under the Shipwreck name, because that beer is the Balz Porter, and it does not go into distribution. All Shipwreck Porter is bourbon barrel aged.

Just a heads up, my buddy (punkrkr27) and I separately cracked last years bottles last night and both had major rust under and around the cap. Properly cellared separately in our cellars the entire time as well. It tasted fine, but just a heads up to everyone who cares.

They made Shipwrecked last year? I thought this was an every other year release?

Whatever the last 12oz red waxed bottle release was. Thought that was last year, but maybe not.

The last batch was released in December, 2012 at the anniversary party. The release is early this year, presumably because the beer was deemed as 'ready' but maybe Talk Like a Pirate Day has something to do with it. Arcadia has been a little inconsistent with the release dates, and I think they did skip a year, maybe it was 2010 but could have been 2009, although a beer that is released in December doesn't hit store shelves until January and everyone thinks it is a release in the January year. Aarrg, it's confusing.
