Someone mentioned this spot in passing in another thread, and it happens to be located not to far from me so I went and checked it out.

Short version - if you live anywhere even remotely close to the Barclays center, you need to go check this out. Said differently, if you've ever felt robbed after leaving bierkraft, you need to check this place out.

Great selection of beers at near-best-in-city pricing, coupled with great taps for on-site drinking or growler fills. On-site pours are offered in several sizes (one of my favorite features in a bar). No child bottles of beer yet for on-site, but they do have several top quality ciders. To top it off, the owner, Ray, is an awesome guy. Friendly, informed, helpful, and an all round proponent of great beer while also being super approachable.

For those of you who have been hanging around the Tiger for the last decade or so, you might recognize Ray. He's one of the stalwart old guys (self describes as such!) who's been a fixture at that back table for as long as they've been on bleecker. I highly recommend anyone in the area drop by and see his store.

Oh, physically, the place is very nice - exposed brick, airy, and with a backyard potentially opening in spring. Sounded like that needed to be worked out still with the landlord, but here's hoping.

Seconded! Like the space and all the owners.

Took me a minute to figure out what you meant. At first I was thinking kid-sized beer.
Gambrinus is a nice spot. As you mentioned, good people, good space, good taps, and convenient location. Let me add - nice little sandwiches.
I didn't get the same impression as you regarding bottle prices.
Hopefully, they'll have a steady audience.

How close is this to Barclay's? Worth pregaming before Pearl Jam?

Very close. Uncle Barry's and Fourth Avenue Pub are other options.

Did 4th Ave in the past, and dug it. Uncle Barry's is cool too?

I've never been there, but heard good things at some point in the foggy past.

Nice! I'll just hop on Beermenus that day for all 3, or maybe just pop in.

    Thanks

The sandwiches looked good, saw other folks eating them, but didn't try any.

As for the pricing, I put them about on par with Good Beer. So not as good as wwhole foods, but better than pretty much any other bottle shop in town. But this is definitely based on only a quick glance, so I could well be mistaken.

Is the Ray you mention the same Ray that worked at City Swiggers?

Thanks for the heads up OP.

Looks like its right by the Q train at Atlantic... might have to make a quick pit stop on my way home.

Not sure. This is definitely the first place he's ever opened/owned, but I don't know where he worked prior to this.

Oh shit, I should have mentioned that. I literally did the exact same thing last Monday. Super annoying.

So not an option pre-NIN, but still an option pre-Pearl Jam in October...

Yeah I'm hoping it'll be easier to deal with than 4th Ave typically is before a concert/game

Fuck, I didn't even think of that.
    Guess I'll be at Uncle Barry's pre-NIN.

Could be a misconception, but it seems like there are lots of new beer places opening in NYC these days.
