I figured it would just be best to start a new thread for this. With all of the discussion over on the Brew Dogs TV Show thread, I got to wondering what an ideal show would be like for you all. Mainly, I was thinking of who you would want to host it (would he be from inside the industry or outside of it?) and what the format would be like. Do you think craft beer "shows" will stay relegated to the likes of podcasts and Youtube (not that there is anything wrong with that)? Finally, perhaps another question: What would you like to see a "craft beer" show accomplish? Anything outside of converting "craft beer virgins"?

Personally, I haven't given it too much thought yet, outside of my comments in the BD thread. I don't really know too many craft beer people that would fit the bill for a host, outside Sam Calgione and Greg Koch, or other famous craft beer people. Someone like Alton Brown for me. I would most likely want something like this:

    Garrett Oliver would be nice.

I don't really know much about the more famous personalities in craft beer, but I think a successful format would involve pairing beer with food. Bring the foodies into the audience along with all the beer geeks and demonstrate that just like wine, the right beer can take a great meal to a whole new level.

I definitely think that going forward, if craft beer wants to reach a broader audience, that they have to approach it from a foodie perspective. It can't just be a beer for beer's sake program.

I have been very harsh on BrewDog in the past. Though as hosts, I thought it was a good show. Just get rid of the stupid gimmicks like making a kelp/chili/rosemary IPA on a train, and I am good. The food paring segment on the BrewDog show was great, and that is what should be the focus. Not stupid gimmicks.

But that's kind of their schtick. We're talking about the guys that stuffed a bottle in a roadkill corpse. Overall, the show wasn't too bad.

I'd love to see a show that takes craft beer to the hood and tries to convert people that love their Henny and Cocolosos. Part of the thrill would be seeing bearded hipsters scared out of their flannels going into the neighborhoods. Then watching the reactions of people as they forsake the Old E for a hop bomb would be just priceless.

I'd love to see that show.

I second that, Garrett Oliver is the man. He did a short segment about beer and cheese which opened a whole new world to me

I haven't seen the show. I think someone who is enthusiastic and maybe not even completely knowledgeable but who wants to learn and really pursue the beer experience. Travelling to locations and visiting the breweries, talking with the brewers and such. You want someone who has questions and can ask them. I am available. :stuck_out_tongue:

I would like to see Mike Rowe do something similar to what he did on "Dirty Jobs", but instead just working in different breweries; interviewing the owners, workers, and customers. Also, showing us great beer and some of the stories behind the brews.

Agreed. I don't really think it's about the host, as long as he (or she) is personable, knows what they're talking about and can get the guests to talk about themselves and the craft. After all, who really know about Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern or even Mike Rowe when they started their shows. Add into that Adam Richmond, the Burger guy and so on.
I think what would make a show like that interesting would be talking to different brewers, touring and tasting their facilities, pairing it with foods, and maybe hosting a round table in each city. So for instance, in California, get Vinnie Cilurzo, Mike Koch, Ken Grossman and so on together for a conversation about how they work, what their philosophies are etc.

His Beer Hunter series is still my ideal.

Imagine celebrating world-class beer that you can as fresh as possible and consume in the unique culture that developed around it -- and it's accessible any time you want it in as large a quantity as you want to consume it.

Quite a contrast from the current U.S. craft connoisseur scene....

That would be awesome. I never thought of Mike Rowe for it. Brian Unger (video), from How the States Got Their Shapes (a great history show with lots of great information in a nice format). He is a great host, asks great questions, and is quite funny (IMO).

Both would be great hosts, I just know that Rowe is a "beer guy".
