Exactly, pumpkin has very little taste.

Hangar 24 Gourdgeous uses real pumpkin, grown half a mile from the brewery, seeded by volunteers and roasted on site. Lovely beer. Will be released on Saturday.

Someone already mentioned Hangar 24 Gourdgeous, which is phenomenal. Although not a stout, Epic's collaboration with DC Brau, Fermentation without Representation, is an awfully tasty imperial pumpkin porter.

Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela and Allagash Ghoulschip both contain real pumpkins and taste nothing like "pumpkin beer"... thank god.

Add another to the list that I just cracked open this evening! Amazing pumpkin brew that tastes nothing else like any other I've had before, and I have had close to at least 50 different pumpkin brews. Nickapalooza, pay close attention to the mention of the flavor added by the fresh pumpkin.

Just split the Schlafly with my wife and it is awesome! Still like Elysian more but this was a fine, fine beer. And I heard they do use fresh pumpkin. This one said it was bottled July 24.

    Shipyard has 2 pumpkin brews
    Smashed Pumpkin and Pumpkin Head.

I'm not much for pumpkin beer, but both of these I'd rate 4.3 across the board.

well Elysian and Stone made a beer with yams that had the gourd flavors. Some people on HBT say that yams create a better pumpkin beer. I just made one with yams, butternut squash, and buttercup squash. It definitely has a more pronounced flavor than pumpkin.

The confusing part is that canned "pumpkin" is usually just butternut squash. The question is whether or not that adds the same thing.

I have no knowledge either way, but Schlafly specifically stated in their employee blog Schlafly Pumpkin Ale...Too Soon?! :
They make no mention of "real" vs "canned" pumpkin, but it does raise the question of where one finds enough fresh pumpkin in June to brew approx. 5000 bbl. of pumpkin ale.

I can promise you it's not canned. It is very real pumpkin, not butternut squash either.

I've not had the Smashed but would like to try it sometime. The Pumpkinhead I've read does not use pumpkin, canned or whole, but a "natural concentrated spiced pumpkin extract".
