A while back I asked for some really good local Denver brews to try while I'm there in a few weeks. So I have some stuff I'm going to go get and bring back to Texas. But while I'm there - can anyone recommend a few fun bars/ pubs/ brew houses that I might enjoy? Keep in mind we will spend much of the 3 day trip on foot. (Plus taking a few tours). But we haven't zeroed in on a hotel yet. If we can find one in the best location vs places to hang out and drink (within walking or short cab distance) that will help our decision.

    Hope all that made sense!

    Thanks!!

Falling Rock Tap House - Great tap selection, best selection
Freshcraft - Great food, and usually a great selection of rare-er beers
Euclid Hall - Great food, and good tap selection
Hops & Pie - Best Denver Pizza (maybe) and a helluva tap list
Colorado Plus - 50+ Colorado craft beers on tap

If he is gonna be walking from a downtown hotel those last two will be a bit of a hike.

He could probably walk to Star Bar though, also Cheeky Monk. And The Ale House at Amato's. That one has the free 16th Street Mall shuttle to get him most of the way there.

Great info, southdenverhoo. I think we're staying at the Westin. That seems to be in the middle of most of those suggested above. Any concerns with that? Or should it be cool? We just typed it up and searched "around me" and most suggested here showed up fairly close.

Hops and Pie will require taxi or bus. My wife and I walked from the convention center to Crooked Stave a few weeks ago and Hops and Pie is beyond that, so greater then 3 mile walk. I guess it just depends how far you want to walk.

no, everywhere I mentioned is walkable from there. You'll be practically on top of Rock Bottom, also. Oh, and in a lot of towns Mellow Mushroom is the best beer place in town. Not so in Denver (IMO) but that's practically around the corner from you too. Both of these are on 16th St. Mall.

It will also be a short walk from the Westin to Great Divide, they have a small but always happening tap room. They are at 2201 Arapahoe, Westin's front door is between 16th and 17th on Lawrence, so out the back door, through Skyline Park, and then left on Arapahoe for 6 blocks. Maybe 10-12 minutes. I didn't mention breweries before because you specifically requested bars/pubs...but Prost is walkable too. if you don't love walking as much as I do, or NVbeer, take the mall shuttle to the very end--not the Market Street Station but the turn-around station behind Union Station. Walk over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the railroad tracks, through the the little commercial area on Little Raven, through Commons Park, over the Platte on the pedestrian bridge (you'll see REI on the left, on the other side of 15th, and all the kayaks in between at Confluence Park.), then over 1-25 on the Highlands Bridge (also pedestrian), to the Ale House at Amatos. From there, its a 4-5 short block walk to Prost, .3 miles per google maps. (Amatos is 1.1 mile from your hotel but probably only about .6 from the end of the free shuttle.

Shoot, I almost forgot--after you cross the Platte, the next street is (appropriately) Platte. A right turn there will take you to Denver Beer Company, in a block. Great patio, and pretty good beer, but save room for Prost (or hit this on the way back).

I didn't answer re "short cab ride". The "short cab ride" you cannot miss is the one from the Westin to Crooked Stave's new tap room at The Source, 3350 Brighton Blvd. And you can eat there too, at Comida.

Agree with all of these places but be wary, Hops & Pie is a small place and will no doubt be packed this week. If you plan on going expect at least a 1-2 hour wait to get a table.

I can go without a sit down meal from Tuesday to Sunday night, what's the big deal? This is why God invented burrito carts.

Tables? We don't need no stinkin' tables, senor!

While not quite downtown (but I *think* they have free shuttles during GABF), the Rackhouse Pub has a killer beer line-up all week, through Sunday. I'm sure that like everywhere else it'll be nuts most nights, Sunday afternoon tends to be relaxed and they'll still have one of the best taplists you'll ever see.

Rackhouse Pub is an awesome choice and is only a small cab fare away from downtown. Thanks for putting that back into my mind, totally forgot about that place. I might have to head over there Tuesday after Falling Rock tonight, gotta get me some TarTar tonight.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. We will actually be there Oct 19-22. Anything major going on that weekend? Like every other visitor to Denver I'd do a backflip naked in the hotel lobby if I could luck into some Pliny or other RR brews. But I'll enjoy whatever I can find. southdenverhoo - thanks so much for the play by play directions! Can't wait to go walking around on a cool Denver evening! It's been 90 degrees plus here! Any chance of snow, by the way? Starting to get excited. First trip to Colorado.

Brother's Bar (on 15th st...don't get confused here) is always good for a great burger and a solid, albeit not "modern" tap list
