A buddy of mine and I were fortunate enough to visit Dark Horse back in Jan for their EPIC 4ELF party. While there, we were both able to snag a case of BA Plead the 5th and have been drinking/trading from our respective reserves ever since. My buddy has kept his cellared in pitch black darkness in his Wisconsin basement ever since. Mine, admittedly, has lived a slightly rougher life having gone through an additional road trip down to TN and living a life of room temperature storage in my first floor beer room.

Two weeks ago I cracked one of mine and discovered something in my beer had changed. The sweetness was dying off and the bourbon was pretty much non-existent. While visiting in Wisco this week, by buddy cracked one from HIS stash, and it was even more off than mine. Same issues, but the beer seemed to be taking on a deep, heavy taste/feel I cannot describe other than to say, it was reminiscent of Peruvian Morning once it begun its slide.

Obviously, this is normally one hell of a beer... but I can say, this shift in taste is far from subtle.

Has anyone else run into this issue? Were there other threads was simply unable to find on the subject?

The 4 elf party is in December, so what you are drinking is technically 2012 BA Plead.

    Perhaps 2012, released in 2013.

Nope. It only sold at the 4 Elf which is always in December.

You are absolutely right. Dec 2012. Don't know why I was thinking this was in January.

The latest(2012) batch was pretty weak on barrel IMHO. Still a good beer just not great

Funny i find the exact opposite thing, compared 2012 to 2011 in december and 12 had alot more bourbon.

Our bottles must have gotten bruised somewhere in transit. Hope my others held up a bit better.

Yah for sure must have been a few bad bottles, i bought 2 cases of 2012 and 2 4pks of 2011 at the 4elf party and they have all been amazing!

I had a case of this batch as well, and I have never opened a bad bottle. Have 3 left sitting in my dark basement, so I'll have to open one soon and report.

I have to agree with you. I just cracked the lone bottle I had (received via trade, thanks Hey5hitGoose!) and it was magnificent! No oxidation with plenty of bourbon barrel flavor. Such a great beer and I'm actually a little upset I cracked it earlier than I wanted to... Stupid internet making me paranoid.

Had a 2012 vs. 2011 on Tuesday and the 2011 was the far superior beer according to everyone at the tasting. The 2012 bottle was not finished between the 5 of us. In all fairness, there was plenty of other "better" beer to be finished before the end of the night.
