I could not believe that I had to get to post #77 to see FW mentioned! I thought people know beers on BA! :stuck_out_tongue:

Don't forget their PNC! While their Anniversaries are technically not stouts, they use a large percentage of their stouts in the blends and are freaking awesomely delicious.

Brooklyn beer makes my favorite stout that is made by an American brewer. I always love the Chocolate stout to hit the store.

I think there's a tier of elites, but I don't know that any one ranks over the other. I think, to be in this tier, you regular stouts need to also be good, not just your whales. Bell's was the first one that came to mind for me. I think Founders, Goose, Deschutes, and CCB are definitely in this list as well. Zhukov is so good (ie: now) and when it's in season, you can find it fairly easily in Florida.

Fuller's are good for stouts. Black Cab Stout and London Porter are both fine beers and very distinct from one another. They do a stronger one too, but I've not had that.

    1. The best one-two punch for me is The Abyss and Obsidian by Deschutes.
    2. Founders KBS/FBS
    3. Bell's Expedition and Black Note
    4. Dark Horse Pt5 and One Oatmeal.

I think some of my favorite breweries for stouts would be the following but not in any order of preference:

Terrapin, Bells, Founders, Short's, Great Divide and Hoppin Frog and definitely Dark Horse.

All of these have put out a very decent line of stouts through the years that haven't left me disappointed though it looks like the new future of Short's seems to be deeply wrapped around IPA's looking at the brewing schedule for 2014 so I am sure they wouldn't make this list if I was asked again next year.

goose island... big john is awesome, and very underrated IMO
    Also alesmith.... evil twin....
and a semi-local pico brewery definitely deserves to be mentioned with these big boys:
the beer diviner (matter of fact, I think they might actually be the best in the lot)

Horses for courses as they say. Never had of Bell's Stouts. Founders Imperial Stout is top shelf but I enjoy Brooklyn BCS more. I prefer my Imperial Stouts with out adjunks and the other Founders Stouts I've tried have them.

There are a few breweries that make multiple good stouts but for me four breweries really stand out:

Founders - CBS, KBS, Imperial and Breakfast Stout
Goose Island - BCBS, BCBCS, Big John, Night Stalker
Toppling Goliath - Mornin' Delight, Kentucky Brunch, Assassin
The Bruery - Black Tuesday, Chocolate Rain, Grey Monday, White Chocoalte

There are several other breweries that have maybe two good stouts but not to the level of these four

The names of them leave little to be desired, but every Evil Twin stout I've had has been pretty impressive.
