Hey, I'm considering hosting a white whale tasting at my house in San Diego. I don't know how many people, but I'm hoping for no more than 15. The date isn't set, but I want it on a weekend within the next month or so. Please get in contact with me if you are interested.
The reason I want to put this together is because I'm trying to write a book on my experiences in the rare/collectible beer scene and this will give me an additional event to write about. This isn't just a bottleshare; I expect it to be more of a formalized tasting. Each person will bring 2-3 whales and will share a little bit of the context/history about why they are special, why they reached such a status. Again, if you're interested, please contact me. My only stipulation is that the people at my tasting have to be 100% trustworthy, completely reliable. I don't want to deal with anything going missing, anyone drinking too much, or coming an hour and a half late.
Edit: People who want to come, I expect to bring at the very least one bottle on the white whale list or something that you know to be of comparable value. Cuvee de Florian isn't on the list, but look, no is gonna be complaining about that.

Sounds cool, but if everyone brings 2-3 whales they will drink too much...

Edit: I also suggest rephrasing the post because it just seems like an excuse to drink people whales. I don't think this is the case at all, I would just try to show some credentials before you expect people to open up their most treasured beers.

I don't think we have to go through all of them. We can kind of pick and choose and people just bring home what they don't drink.

Open a spread sheet and choose that before hand. I'm sorry I'm sounding like an ass I'm just being honest.

Actually, I think that's a really good idea.
I don't know how many bottles is right. When people brought 2-3 to another tasting event, it worked out really well. No one was drunk, most bottles got consumed, and everyone enjoyed everything. Of course I understand that 3 750 mL's is a lot, but if someone brings 3 375's or 2 750's, it'd be cool.

I think it all depends, because unfortunately most whales are high ABV. Two big beers that are 750's would so most people in for sure. If you are looking for more articulate conversations I think less is more. Pairings could be cool too...

How do you think I should rephrase the post? Your comments have been really useful btw.

If 15 people split one bottle of beer, does anyone actually get to drink that beer? Spoiler: No. No they don't.

At least there is a story (writing a book) - so u have to give credit for the long con.

Book Spoiler Alert - Anything hard to get, Barrel aged/sour, with a hand numbered bottle, with a wax top, possibly with a day associated to it is a whale - taste is irrelevant, it has to taste good so it will, add this to the basic human trait of wanting what they cant easily have and the effort associated with getting it and there u have it.

Where can we see evidence of your good reputation, trustworthiness, references, reliability, etc like you're asking of us? Seeing as you've only been a member of these forums since June, I can't see that here, but maybe your very active in the beer community outside of this forum? I just think it would be great for people to know who they're dealing with before breaking out their most prized bottles.

Have you written any other books?

I think your concern is totally valid. I'm very new to beeradvocate, but I've been active on the reddit/r/beertade for several years. I, of course, will be supplying my own whales, as will my friends, and I just wanted to give other people an opportunity to join us in what would be a fun, formal event. I am really confused why everyone is being so negative in this thread. When someone tells me, "Hey, I'm opening up my home to friends and strangers alike, providing food and opening up my rarest bottles, and reaching out for help, for an extra insight into writing a book" I don't look for the person's wicked intentions. I fucking say thank you. That's really fucking nice of you. You don't want to go? That's fine. You don't know me or my friends and very well may be uncomfortable with sharing your most prized possessions with strangers. But you don't have to belittle my cause. It's the first time in my life I'm trying to write a book and instead of getting support, all I get is criticism.

Why? Because too many people have been burned in the past by new people making claims of "White Whale" slayings mere months after joining BA.

You have no cache. You're not talking about about gathering around the campfire and opening bottles of out-of-state shelf beers. You're making claims of drinking rare one-offs (with no mention of what they are) without anyone able to back up anything about you.

I'm not saying you're not being 100% honest, because benefit of the doubt and all that, but I can see why people would be suspect to your advances.

And also cursing and getting super-defensive when people mention that your lack of proving yourself as a good BA makes you a bit worrisome as a whale-slaying partner probably gets you a point or two in the "would not drink rare beers with" column.

Why don't you list what you plan to open so people can judge whether or not they want to go. What "white whales" are on the table?

*edit* I have no interest in this, but I'm sure it would be helpful to others.

The reason I didn't list them is because I have no guarantee, beyond my own bottles of what will be there. I have had friends bring whales before, but I can't guarantee they will show up (yet) and don't want to damage my credibility if that is the case.
As I already mentioned, anyone who is interested in going is welcome to get in contact with me via message and ask me whatever they'd like. There's no commitment to going if you have already tried the bottles I have or don't have interest, or whatever it is. I will have available 3 bottles on the white whale list, but without a set date, or set friends showing up, cannot guarantee anything beyond that. If there isn't a good enough turnout, say 8-10 people, I'll just reschedule the event.

I don't know what you mean of people getting burned in the past. Obviously, I'm new to this site, so don't know how one could get burned by that. Can't you just show up, see that the event is ridiculous, and not open up your bottle? I mean, it's a waste of your time, sure, but it shouldn't be a big deal.
Regardless being super-defensive, I guess you're right. All I hear on beeradvocate seems to be negativity and mockery. I tried to bring something positive to the table and got totally shot down. It's frustrating to me. Like I said, I don't open up my home to strangers all that often. I thought it would be appreciated. That's where the frustration comes from.
