In the beer world, a barrel, as a unit of measurement, is 31 gallons. Now I don't know if Fremont is using beer bbl measurement, or whiskey bbl measurement (which I don't know what that amount is). IIRC, oil is measured in 50gal barrels.

When I got into craft beer drinking I was told that no math was involved.

Is a case 24 or 12. If it's 24 then the 53 gallon makes sense, and if 12 the 31 would make sense.

A case of bombers is 12 bottles.

Kind of wish the new ratings were separate from the old batch, I would bet they have a pretty big difference.

That's a good point, might be worth asking the mods to separate these two profiles as unique beers. They are different enough that a case could be made for it.

It's a unit of measurement that is recognized across the industry, a bbl is 31 gallons. What package the beer then goes into (1/2bbl, 1/4bbl, 1/6bbl, various can and bottle sizes) is not relevant. That said, if a given brewery is barrel aging their brew in a barrel of a different size, doesn't change the standard measurement.

We're not talking about the unit of measure barrel, but the actual barrels which Fremont is filling.

Again, without having talked to anybody from Fremont, my guess is that they have a xx bbl brewing system. That's what they have recipes for, and what they pay taxes on. So,I suspect they brewed xy bbls of base beer. They then aged that beer in wooden containers of whatever size. Regardless of the size of the aging container, for practical purposes, and for ease of conversation, I'm guessing that when they say they brewed YX Barrels of beer, they're talking about the industry standard. I was wrong once before, so, theoretically, I could be again.
