    Why fight the addiction?

It's a nice hobby, relatively inexpensive, good for the economy, tastes good, makes people happy, and unites people of all races and beliefs in cheerful fellowship all across this tiny blue marble hurtling through space...

    Embrace the madness.

I think my issue is my local stores use Facebook to teh max. They post several times a day any interesting beer they have mostly Friday and Thursday but other times too. This allows me to look at the beer, come over here for a description and puts it on my radar. Going into a store and knowing there is a new beer that fits your preferences makes it harder to walk away empty handed. The inclusion of buy 6 bottles get a 10% discount doesn't help either. If I am at 4 bottles I tend to look for a couple of Weihenstephaner at 3-4 to push me to 6 bottles. Sometimes buying one beer has lead me to pay less than if I had bought the five. So I enjoy my beer paid for by the store.
Social media has transformed beer buying in my eyes. BTW my locals are Redstone Liquors and Craft Beer Cellar Winchester and I keep an eye on Bogie's too. A glance at their facebook pages just damages your wallet.

I'm addicted to collecting. I'm pretty sure it's my dad's fault. He collects antiques and he got me started early on when I was in elementary school and started collecting baseball/basketball/football cards.

Way to go everybody. My addiction has been strongly activated by this thread.

Today I will crawl out from under my mossy tree stump on the moor and head south on a beer hunting mission. I shall capture about $200 worth of trophy collectibles. It will all be good.

I will splurge when I go to Colorado, but a hundred dollars worth of beer never lasts long most because I will by the latest seasonal bomber. I have spent way too much on beer this year but o well. You only live once.

I buy too much beer than I should. For sure. But I hate seeing it just sit there so then I drink more beer than I should. For sure.

I agree with all of this. Add me to the "addicted to buying beer" list.
Worst part about all the beer in the cellar is that it really prevents me from brewing more of my own, which is what I want to do more of...so I have decided to not buy anymore commercial beer (within reason) until my cellar has been significantly reduced.

Think I am heading this way. Usually make a once a month run, get about 2 cases of mixed singles, 4 & 6 packs, then restock when it gets low. However, was able to be in Maryland this past weekend and thought "Hey, maybe I can pick up a sixer or two of something that doesn't distro to PA!"

    2 more cases later...........

Also, thinking we could get together a BA Rambling Road Convention to tour some of these massive cellars. Like a plague of locusts, we would descend and strip the beer fridges/closets/cellars clean before moving on to our next victim...er...host! Yes, host is what I meant.

I am also in the same boat because i love both buying and drinking beer. It does not help that I have lived in 4 states in the last 3 years so that ads to the possibility of trying a lot more beers than if I was living in one place. I have started a small cellar but have about 40-50 beers in there..all for aging BA Stouts and Barleywines mostly. The last couple of months, I have really just started buying singles/made my own 6 pack instead of buying a 6 pack of everything. There is still that rush of finding something new/good as well

I have around 10-15 of various barrel aged beers and Belgians, and it drives my wife insane! Then she goes and gets 3 6ers of Westbrook Gose! The hipocrisy... Next week we go to Asheville. I plan on bringing something back.

I absolutely have this problem. My girlfriend and I were just discussing how I am more of a beer collector than a beer drinker!

When you say "case", you mean a pallet, right? Like 60 boxes of beer. That's 1,440 bottles. So, that would explain that poll. For the record, I only have half a pallet of beer in my cellar.

Relatively inexpensive? Compared to what? Traveling, Skiing and Cars?

I enjoy running, reading, cooking for myself, fantasy sports, those are inexpensive hobbies. Homebrewing is a cheaper hobby than buying bombers and rare releases.

I respect and admire the home brewers. However, I'm lazy. That's too much work for me. I need instant gratification. Thus, crawling down into my dungeon and selecting (by candlelight) the fine ale to be consumed each evening (with my beautiful wife) is a quality of life issue for me. As it is I'm sure for most of my fellow BAs who are obviously equally as "addicted".

    : )

Collecting great beers enhances my reading, writing, food enjoyment, traveling and artistic endeavors tremendously. For me, the return on the investment is huge...relative to the small cost of a well crafted beer, but this way of thinking is not for everybody. The positive energy coming from someone drinking and respectfully enjoying a great ale (such as The Oracle tonight) is infectious...in my opinion.

    200? lol.

Last March before i started trading so much away (and drinking so much) when i did a count i had almost that many stouts.

Just wait until you have multiple beer fridges, and dedicated closets, and beer at other people houses....

And I'm small potatoes for sure. I've got nothing really.

Some guys on here have big basements that are pretty full, others actually pay for storage.
Do a little searching on the forums: its pretty crazy what some ppl have.

Personally I've slowed down a lot this year. But like some others above it would take me a loong time to drink everything if i stopped buying today.

So really what does it mean? I don't know ? A sense of control? Something to get excited about in slower periods on your life? A way to feel spontaneous? A substitute for other power or fun? If its any of those its probably different for each person.
For me I just like have stuff so that ppl come over i can share. But i see the degree of compulsion in it.

But if you are worried then just STOP.

    For a while.

See how it feels to do something different.
    It wont hurt.

Or even, play a game. Set aside some money each week that you would spend(might reasonably have spent) on beer. Put it in a savings account or a safe.
See what that money looks like after two months. Then see if you want to reevaluate the amount of beer you've been buying.
