Burton Baton was my 1st DIPA.... and after trying many others over the years, it still is one of my favorites.

Another thread calling out a specific brewery because they are an easy target. Do I think that DFH is a bit over-hyped, yes, but I would rate their overall quality higher than other breweries that whose name you could fill in the blank of this thread title with. DFH > New Belgium.

I have to be honest. I am a big fan of Dogfish Head. Their stuff is imaginative, balanced and largely error free. Even though my palate trends drier than most of their offerings provide, I and always one of the first to jump onto anything that they push my way. For example, just last night I enjoyed American Beauty and thought it was a typical "Dogfish" taste. Its partly due to their yeast, its also partly due to their attitude and ingredients that they feel best represents who they are. I often recall this character as they "Dogfished" it up! Its these kind of guys who are pushing into the tomorrow of craft beer and are not simply mimicking what others are doing. But I have to say- at the price point for most of the larger format releases, they are making me a one-and-done customer for specific beers.

You try Green Flash Imperial, Firestone's Union Jack, or Stone's Cali-Belgique? I typically don't like IPAs, either, but I like those three!

frankly, i might like a "malty mess" over the standard hop-salad IPA selection that's out there ... but I have to agree with you on the Punkin Ale. it's not terrible, but it's not great in any way. just kind of OK.

with that said, I can look at this Punkin Ale and see the construction is fantastic. everything about it looks and feels like a great brew, and while I'm not a huge fan of the taste, Dogfish Head has done enough to get me wondering about the rest of their stuff.

Yeah, I didn't care for the Punkin much, either, but it sells well, so there's obviously a market for it.

I thought the World-Wide Stout was amazing, like a Bourbon County that goes to 11.

And the 90 Minute IPA is just good. It's the kind of beer where you think "That's really not bad" and then you start trying other Double IPAs and you realize it's the bar that everyone else is measuring themselves against.

DFH used to be so loved. They still are, but they seem to get more and more hate each year. It seems like it all started after Brewmasters.

And they make a bunch of great beers.. Indian Brown Ale is still one of my alltime faves.. Burton Baton, Sah'tea, Aprihop, 90 Min, Black & Blue, Red & White, Midas Touch, Palo Santo Marron are awesome as well.. I could list alot more.. they have a few clunkers, but who doesn't? I'll always have a soft spot for them since they are one of the first breweries I fell in love with, but alot of their beers are just timeless.

Palo Santo was one of those times were my excitement to try a beer was trumped by the actual taste of the beer.

I'm glad they make Palo, 90, WWS , Olde School and Burton; I wish they'd make more Raison de Extra.

Namaste is great for the style as far as I am concerned.
The others I have tried so far from them were good to solid, nothing bad but nothing that I would call great either. Palo Santo Marron mentioned by a lot of people is good but not great for me personally. 120 min. was not bad but also a complete mess of mismatched flavours & ideas. I must be noted that I have tried only about 10 DFH beers so far, my experience with them is limited. WWS is okay but subpar for the style, I do not get the appeal.

I hope that my bottle of Midas Touch which I still need to open will prove me wrong.

Remember, when you open the Midas Touch that the original goal in brewing that beer was the re-creation of a beverage originally brewed and consumed long, long ago. Thus it may also represent a taste of human history.

    Squall was delicious.
90 min was the 1st IPA I liked.
Burton Baton kicked it up for me.
    120, well, is pretty good.

Do they make "hop bomb" beers. IMO, no, they make a more traditional balanced beer with there IPA's. Everyone has there own preferences.

we get it. You live next to three Floyd's. so there Floyd's is wonderful, everything else sucks. thinking ffh.is bad is the hipster way of looking at things now, but they were crucial in starting the revolution. think about where you came from. or you probably have not been in the game a long time.

Hard to argue with stats. I've been a member since 2002, but It's still funny to see posts like this. Just because one person doesn't like a beer from a brewery, they feel the need to put it down in a public forum. Then you get to see all the different tastes everybody has. One thing I've learned since joining, everybody is different. Actually, I learned that much earlier than 2002, but this just reinforces my learnings.

    Define great.

If great equals a top 100 beer....then no.

If great equals brewing a wide variety of styles well, then again, the answer is no. By this I mean, can they brew a simple pilsner well like Sierra Nevada with Summerfest, while still creating good examples of the more popular styles...etc.

They win the award for being the most out-of-the-box creative brewery, and if for you that defines great, then yes, they make great beers. Simply by the numbers though, no they have no elite beers, and they certainly don't brew any conservative beers that some consider more difficult.
