I don't think hops is the only thing that makes a good beer. I love malty beers. I just think they toned the beer down to the point it's not what I've come to expect over the years. It's still good, just not the same, imho.

And for the record, I hate being that guy that says "X" beer isn't the same or has changed. I hear it all of the time and I usually disagree.. but in this case I don't think it's the same. Doesn't make it a bad beer, it's still good, it's just not the same.

This was my first year trying it and I love it. I think of myself as a hop head, but like to drink maltier beers as the weather cools. I thought it was plenty hoppy but wonderfully balanced. I'd drink this all year round.

Hasn't nosferatu been on shelves for nearly two months? I'm sure it was much hoppier when it was initially released.

I agree with OP. It's not as hoppy as in years past. Not as good in my opinion. Still good, but not as good.

Have you noticed the style change each year? 2 years ago it's a hoppy imperial red, last year it's a strong ale and this year it's and old ale.

Does anyone have any proof that it has changed besides their subjective opinion or hearsay?

When was Nosferatu ever a hop bomb? In the years that I've been drinking it, I've never once thought "wow, this is super hoppy".

I don't think GLB would ever bury a stake in this ale.

I look forward to this Child of the Night each year...It was a stepping stone for me to the next tier of great ales.

Nosferatu is always nicely balanced when it first comes prowling out at night. It deserves a rigorous pour into a large tulip...in my humblest opinion.

Leave it in it's coffin for about 6 months and it crawls out quite nicely as a malty and pleasant beverage. At least in my universe it does.

Malty is every bit as delicious as hoppy is. Balance between the two is even better. Can't the hops and barley just get along?

Well, Nosferatu the beer is theirs to change if they want. As long as they don't try to change the movie or the Blue Oyster Cult song of the same name, it won't bother me.

Did they change the spices this year?

I used to buy a case but I stopped cold turkey as I think it is way overpriced now ($12/4pk). Actually most GL beers I can find better or equivalent for less.

It says Imperial Red on the bottle... someone hasn't drank it for a while. I don't think the bottle has said "Stock Ale" for at least a couple of years.

Regardless, I find it a bit overrated. Definitely a solid brew, but after this year, I doubt I will seek it out again.

OK, all you pickers of nit! I just grabbed a bottle of Nosferatu to put in the fridge since reading this thread made me thirsty for one.

The "enjoy by" date is 11/22/13.
The label reads "A handcrafted stock ale"
    DOH!

(Photo can be taken if you really want to pick nits.)

That's the chair in Oregon. I think in Ohio it's just 20 years in medium-security

I understand the blurry beer style definitions, but If the description on the GLBC website says its a red ale, and there are reviews of Nosferatu on this site from as far back as 2004 referring to it as a red ale, and its made in America then why is it not in the American amber/red ale style category?

Seriously?? I still have a couple bottles with the same 11/22/13 "Enjoy by" date.. but the label says "A handcrafted Imperial Red Ale".. that's very weird..
