I'm not sure if I'd make that drive, but I've had many/most of the great DIPA's that are recognized on the BA list and Citra has my highest rating, slightly edging out Abner. It's pretty darn good.

This is the American craft beer scene since 2011.
It's horrible to have some favorite beers that are no longer accessible without stuff like lottery's. But the good thing is that there are 10 other beers sitting on the shelves that are just as tasty as the lotteried beers.

To the OP, I have never had a beer worth a six hour drive. But, if you like hiking, camping, biking, or fishing, it makes for a great weekend, that's the only reason I go up to Kernville, the beer is just an awesome bonus!

So you enter the lottery, win and are questioning about going?... I live an hour from the brewery and didn't win...
You better go for the sake of the locals not being able to buy this beer because they didn't win the lottery because of people doing what you are doing... I understand it's far, but if you were even edgy about it you should't have entered to begin with

Can we put the pliny vs thing to rest? Are there DIPAs better then pliny, yes, is it good, yes. Can we just keep in mind that it's been brewed since the late 90's and was cutting edge at the time and therefore it still deserves to be recognized. Now that my rants done im going to go enjoy so blind pig.

Why not give your ticket to someone who is closer (or already going) and then trade them some of that Pliny for the Citra?

Citra is worth the drive. KRBC is worth the jourey. Bring some bottles up and enjoy the weekend camping! Honesty camping next to the river with a couple growlers of Just Outstanding is extremely hard to beat... Factor in citra bottles and citra on draft... You can have Pliny all the time!

You can't, in order to enter the lottery you have to give your name and drivers license number, if those don't match when your picking up, no beer for you, they won't even let other people pick them up if you call them and tell them all their information

I don't believe I'd enter a lottery unless I was prepared to follow thru.

To be clear, I am going to go...I should have/could have been clearer in the original post that I was more interested in the hypothetical. I would not have entered the lottery had I not planned to get my mitts on the bottles. sorry for any confusion. I will be going with my wife, son and dog to meet some friends and make a weekend out of it.
Thanks to everyone for weighing in.

It's always worth the effort and drive to seek any new beer you've been hearing about and want to try for the first time. The last year that "younger" was available for growler fills at RRBC I flew to SFO and rented a car and spent Friday night for the Younger. Worth it? Back then it was worth the trip. So over the Younger hype. Would I fly back up to visit RRBC again? Yes. But not for the Younger release. I prefer Citra over younger anytime. But thats me. Am I going for the Citra release next week. No. Not this release.

Awesome! The brewery is cool if you've never been there and the little town is neat as well
Hope you guys have a safe trip, and enjoy those brews!

Going to the source just for the experience is part of being a BA. That was the only way for me to experience Alpine and at this moment I am in Arizona checking out the local breweries. KRBC is unique and if you have the opportunity you need to make the trip.

The better comparison would be Citra to Younger, a bi-annual vs. annual release, with lots of hype surrounding both releases.

For me, whatever trouble I go through to try a highly regarded beer at least once is worth it. Having had Younger, I will never wait in a 6-hour line again. It was a great beer, but ...

No mules. Lottery entry made you put your drivers license down. Only that person can pick up the beer.

I've made the 3 1/2 hour each way drive a couple of times for Citra. Even 5th Anniversary when it first came out. Is it worth it? Fuck yes. Just for Class X alone. Not to mention it's in the middle of nowhere, which is often a great place to find yourself. Good fishing as well as the sense of getting away from it all for the weekend. I'm glad I won the lotto.

I'd drive the 3 1/2 hours one way, double that probably not unless I was going to spend the night and have a nice day

Like others have said, Citra, Class X, JO IPA, and any other beers they have are worth the trip.

Citra has a bit more malt and a very balanced beer that you could seriously drink all day whereas Pliny is hop forward with citrus and fruit. I came out with 6 Citras, growler of Class x stout, growler of blueberry (forgot the name), 3 5th year anny, and 6 JO IPA. You will come back with some amazing beer.

I did it, probably won't do it again since the hype has gone crazy.

My advice is, do it once, then decide if you will do it again.

It's well worth the trip if you can tick a couple of these:

Go with, or meet with friends and have a good time
Mountain bike - ride the Cannell Plunge
Go fishing and or camping and or river rafting
Stop by Moo Creamery in Bakersfield and get one of their sundaes
Bring back a couple bottles for me
    Bored

For all those heading up for the Citra weekend do yourself a favor and take 178 via 14. A tad bit longer in miles but you will save the headache and time from the Bakersfield drive thru the long and winding road. And you will see some of the most Joshua Trees in one area anywhere here in the Mojave desert. And have a great time!
