The espresso IRS is an odd year release, comes out every other year.

Very true, but I think they change it every year. So who knows if we will ever see espresso again... Hope so!

Stone IRS isn't a great value, Old Rasputin, Narwhal, and (do they still do 4 packs of) Yeti? those are all cheaper.
Ten Fidy is about the same price at $14 a 4 pack and I never hear that one being called a great value.

It's so interesting what those bombers do to our thought process of "Value"...

I love both, but can't wait to pop my Chocolate Yeti that i've been saving since the beginning of the year.

Yeah, I suppose Narwal is 2cents per ounce cheaper:rolling_eyes: and also a great beer. I was also referring to the availability. None of the others quoted are even close to the availability of IRS.

IRS goes for 7.99 a bomber where I shop, and at that price ten fidy and yeti are both less $ per oz. Since both those beers blow IRS out of the water I don't bother wasting my time or money.

Expedition is, to me, the best bang for buck stout made and is maybe the straight-up best traditional RIS made. I think Stone is pretty high up, but yeah, 18 bucks for a sixer of Expedition is actually pretty good. And it's one of the best aging stouts made.

Also, I dig the name and avatar, though I feel a band like Origin or Nile would be more appropriate given the name!

I wish Stone IRS was on the shelf year-around at $5.99 where I live.

    Stone IRS- $6/22oz = $0.27 per oz
    Narwhal- $9/48oz = $0.18 per oz
    Old Rasputin- $7/48oz = $0.14 per oz

Stone IRS costs about 50% more than Narwhal. Stone IRS is nearly 100% more expensive than Old Rasputin.

With all the great RIS and DIPA's coming out in 4 and 6 packs these days, I've all but quit buying bombers of anything.

remind us. where is the brewery that produces Ten Fidy? how about the one that brews Yeti? where are you from again? definitely no pattern there nor any bias in your tone.

at any rate, i got a case of each, IRS & Espresso for $61 per. for the longest, Northern Cali Costco locactions also had both for $4.99 per bomber. at that price point they were pretty friggen competitive. mho

I wasn't huge on the normal version of the RIS, but the Espresso was fan-freaking-tastic.

The espresso is still pretty easy to find in Chicago.

I love all 3 of these, but I personally don't really think Narwhal or Rasputin are in the same league as Stone RIS. Narwhal and Raspy are more in the tier below that with Storm King, Green Flash, and a few others. I still mostly agree with you on buying bombers though. It's a rip, and I tend to only buy them if they're whales or for aging purposes, nowadays.

Didn't mean for simple economics to make you shed tears...
4 pack of fidy 13.99 = 29 cents an oz
4 pack of yeti 8.99 = 19 cents an oz
1 bomber of irs 7.99 = 36 cents an oz
I don't make the math, but I do work my ass off for my money.

Stone is one of my faves. Would love to see some 12oz versions and/or the Espresso version here in Philly. But still that and Old Rasputin are my "go-to" RIS's.

Where I live, a 4 pack of Narwhal is $10. I haven't bought Stone IRS because I generally avoid bombers, but IF it were actually $6 here, that wouldn't be that much more expensive than SN's offering.

That said, Stone IRS is probably more like $8-9 a bomber here, which would put it at a good 60-80% more - definitely not a "value" if that's the case.

sounds like a personal problem, bro'. first off, @ 21 cents an oz. (that's what i paid), it kinda screws up your Fidy argument, if that was your argument in its entirety. 2nd of all, we may drink a lot but none of us are stupid enough to not have caught your "blows it out the water, i don't waste my time" snicker, which tells some of us your feelings aren't just derived in mathematics. nice try. here you are wasting your time on the subject telling us how you don't waste your time on the subject. those are some nice beers you're promoting, it'd just be nice if ya did so without sounding like a hater in a costume. jmho.

I reckon I should drive to cali to get that smoking hometown price then? C'mon man, think about your arguments before you start grilling someone. It doesn't matter to me what you pay for it, I can't get it for that price without having to drive 20 miles out of my way. And so what if I think yeti and ten fidy taste better? I think stone's ipa's are over rated too. *gasps*

EDIT: It appears that I am not the only one who feels the same about ten fidy vs irs

7.99 is on the high side for Stone IRS, and 13.99 for ten fidy is the lowest price I've seen (not by a lot, just 1-2 bucks, but still). With average prices for these they are nearly identical $/oz, and they're both fantastic beers, so I'd say they're both a great value! The fact that Stone IRS tends to be on the shelf for longer (sometimes all year depending on where you are), just makes it easier to come by whenever you're craving some RIS goodness! I think the point the OP was making was that there's generally very little fan-fare surrounding this beer, when in reality there probably should be.
