    Good afternoon,

A beer that we've never bottled before has just been packaged and is awaiting distribution throughout the Great Lakes state. Evil Urges, our Belgian Dark Strong Ale, will be available in six packs for what I'm sure will be a very limited time. Here is some information regarding this kick ass brew--

    • Evil Urges was first brewed on September 23, 2011 and was the 1,333 batch of beer brewed in Bellaire.
    • Described as a Belgian Dark Strong Ale, this style is historically known for it's high alcohol content and the Belgian's use of a regional candy sugar in the beer to help mask the intensity of it's strong ABV.
    • Evil Urges was the last of 5 different Belgian beers brewed in Bellaire in 2011. This 5 beer series was conceived by Ryan Hale and consisted of the first true to style Belgian beer styles, as well as some experimental Belgian beer styles, ever brewed at Short's.*
    • Originally called Devil Dog, the brew crew ultimately settled on the name Evil Urges, paying homage to a favorite band for many of us here at Short's, My Morning Jacket, and their 2008 studio album release Evil Urges.
    • This year marks the first time we have ever bottled Evil Urges for limited shipment throughout Michigan, releasing only 660 cases for distribution.
    • Small amounts of the first batch of Evil Urges brewed in 2011, as well as a portion of the second batch brewed on September 10, 2012, were placed in Bourbon barrels to be aged and released at a later date. Those attending the 2013 Detroit Fall Beer fest will be able to sample the bourbon version. It's good.
    • This year's Bourbon barrel aged version of Evil Urges has been aging for over a year, until finally going on tap at the pub at some point this weekend.
Evil Urges: A Belgian Dark Strong Ale with a deep dark brown color and thick viscous allure. A sharp aroma of chocolate and molasses hits the senses, reminiscent of a rich liqueur. Aided by additions of Belgian amber candy sugar, the initial flavors are sweet and malty, with some unique dark fruit qualities. Defined roast malt character, with a slight black coffee bitterness, lead into an intense warming finish, rounding out this full bodied experience.
    7.8% ABV
    50 IBU
Bourbon Evil Urges: A Belgian Dark Strong Ale brewed with amber candy sugar, aged in Bourbon barrels for 12 months. Vanilla beans were added directly to the barrels. The nose is loaded with sweet aromas of plum and sugary molasses, with some initial hints of the high alcohol content within. Ample flavors of vanilla and toasted oak blend with a roasted malt and yeast fruitiness, creating an experience similar to eating a handful of chocolate covered raisins. Prominent toffee flavors are found in the finish and a warming mouthfeel expected from a beer of this strength.
    8.4% ABV
    50 IBU

I've always wondered if this is a My Morning Jacket reference?

    Either way, it's freaking delish.

Really? It hasn't even hit yet so how do you know that? Plus, all the other Short's releases last the entire day at these stores in/around Royal Oak: Holiday, Cloverleaf, GS, 8 Degrees Plato, etc.

So, because you love me, you're going to bottle some of the barrel aged version and sell it at the pub only, right?

The BA version is awesome...and I don't typically care for BSDA! I'll give the regular version a try though.

Went to my regular shops today that always have the Short's limited releases. Nobody received their Evil Urges yet. One store told me it was at the distributor, but they aren't releasing it yet. Maybe next week then.
