I always thought of Bastard as a sort of Bitter or ESB, admittedly I haven't had it in over a decade, I just opt for the Stone IPAs.

they don't; they just mislabel some of the bottles....

lol exactly...from Stone? Just close your eyes: all you'll taste is hops and overcarbonation....

It's actually an Imperial Red Cascadian Dark Ale. One of the best in its respective class....

Arrogant Bastard is an Older Beer.

Strangely You will find it at even the most low life convenience stores all across California it is that Popular.

But in truth AB is REALLY an Imperial Red Ale.

Never liked Double Bastard, too sweet IMO.

I've never been able to put my fingers on exactly what kind of ale Arrogant Bastard Ale is. I would say it's much too sweet to be an IPA, or even a pale ale. I'd go with red ale myself.

And for the record, if you haven't had the oaked arrogant bastard ale, make sure you hunt that down. What could they do to make one of my favorite beers better? Age it in oak! It's not all that much different flavorwise overall, but the small oaked flavor really is a great touch.

The Oaked Age AB is the best of the series IMO. AB is ok, the DB too sweet, I have a Lucky Bastard but never popped it.

And American Black Ale is just about as grossly a term as BIPA, since "black ale" is a general term used for porters and stouts. CDA is my term of choice. I'm also not opposed to India Black Ale, though that one's also a step misleading.

Agreed, and the huge price difference makes it almost not worth it, but it is one to revisit once or twice every every other year or so, because that hint of oak smoothness does help to spread out the gamut of complex, almost chaotic flavors, so to speak.

I think Arrogant Bastard is an excellent beer because of its unbalance.

I LOVED Undercover, can't wait for the next release. I don't care what the style is listed as, it's a DIPA to me. Frankly though, there's so much variance in DIPA's that the style name is nearly meaningless- which can be said of a few beer styles. One can expect big hops and big ABV, and just about all other bets are off. Last weekend, I shared 4 different beers with my friends- Double Dose, Larry, Dirtwolf and Double Crooked Tree. The 1st 3 would be pretty obviously considered the same style, but the Double Crooked Tree is VERY different. All 4 are considered DIPA's, and all 4 are delicious. The 2nd part is all that matters IMO.

Ale should not be used to describe porters and stouts.
