I don't disagree with you regarding the depth and range of beers. Absolutely true.

My point was that in my opinion, wine and beer are two very different animals, and from my experience, it doesn't stand to reason that a wine-lover is necessarily going to like a beer which a beer-lover believes is most similar or equally "complex" to wine. For every wine-lover I know who loves Rochefort 10 right off the bat, there's another who dislikes it, but is a big fan of a well made Pilsner. So all I'm saying is, the best gift from the OP, would be a beer he feels strongly about.

Your comment - "Red wine is red wine is red wine. If you don't like red wine you will not like any red." Disagree wholeheartedly.

I'm also from the UK. I have to say those cask bitters and IPAs you refer to are something that I miss. I love the US beer scene. But I also miss the UK one.

I would recommend a sour for a wine drinkers palate. The Bruery Oude Tart is VERY good, or Supplication but it comes in such a small bottle he might think you're being cheap lol.

Funny, this is literally my situation as well. She loves wine but goes crazy over these two brews...

I was gonna suggest a good Saison for the white wine drinker. Something like Saison Dupont or Hennepin should appeal to a Chardonnay/reisling lover

For reds - a good Baltic Porter or Quad should do. Pannepot would be my recommendation.

A sour. Rodenbach Grand Cru or something similar (sweet/sour).

Thanks for all the responses, it's certainly given me a lot to mull over. Thankfully I either have or can easily get about 90% of the recommendations. Now i just need my wife to find out a little more about his preferences. The bottle in question is a Cab Sav from a small producer in napa. So part of me thinks about heading down the consecration/rodenbach grand cru/Pannapot route. I do have a 2010 Vintage Rodenbach...

I agree. I was at a wine tasting and server cracked a bottle of Rochefort 8 to cleanse the palate between wine varietals. It worked well.

If he like chardonnay or riesling, get him some Hennepin.

I have been exposed to many different types of red wines many from excellent French Spanish and Californian vineries. I have yet to find a one I could get past a sip or two , I have ben told I will grow into it, but more years gone by than I care to admit to, and still there is no red wine I can imagine enjoying. So do you want a bottle of vintage chateau Neuf Du Pape sitting in our house? I would still say there is less breadth between different wine varietals than the varieties of "beer''.

Surly Five / Pentagram has a great red wine-like profile. Haven't met a wine lover that hasn't enjoyed that beer.

From your description this guy sounds high class and discerning. The Westy shows that he knows his stuff. No shelf turds. He'll know. You'll need to trade for something or pony up for an online buy. I'm assuming that the wine was $100+ so I think that a comparable amount is reasonable. Someone else has already suggested it but this calls for Cantillon all the way. Maybe Fou Foune, Mamouche or St. Lam. Blabaer would be baller. Complex. Highly sought after. Pricey. Do it and you'll have instant street cred.
