I haven't been keeping up recently as much as normal, but I am wondering what the new 'in' beers are that I have to try? I am a seasoned BA trader and have had most of the 'it' beers over time, but I can't imagine any of them can hold a candle to the newest 100 bottle release from a hyped new brewery. So, have at it - what are the gotta have it new beers that make me say, "let's go for the mystery box."

FYI - I am talking recent - I have had Atrial Rubicte, CA Brandy Huna, GoM (new) / M+C1 (is 2 better than 1 because there are less bottles?).

Yeah - but, I'll just trade for it then. Here's what I am getting at. A buddy of mine told me well over a year ago that Toppling Goliath was amazing. I ignored him because I am an idiot and then now I can't seem to trade for any Toppling Goliath after finding out they make the best collection of IPAs in the country.

So...I am hoping to know what I should be trying to snag in people's opinion, while also poking fun at the idea that sometimes we overlust after beer that isn't any good, but is different and mysterious over the good stuff we get at home. Maybe a bit too much for Friday morning...

There's a new HF/Cantillon collaboration. Only 50 bottles. But I'm not supposed to talk about it

oh well then you should asking this in the trading forums. IMHO. I never been a ticker or a trader. Though I have helped a few out here and there. I do not live for the next IN beer. But its a function of age I found. The younger you are and the newer you are into micro's the more likely you are ticker/trader....

Now I am not saying this is bad. Its just NOT my thing.

I shouldn't really say. Both the first and second rules state that we're not supposed to talk about it

I feel bad for you that in your old age you do not realize that beer gets better the more hyped it is. I could drink a delicious local, but why would I? I've had it before. Gross.

In reality - this is why I love blinding beers. I'll bring a BT09 or some random local to a tasting and stick it in a bag and we just have at it. Done the same with homebrews as well. Beer is only as good as how good the liquid inside is. Sometimes, the new hyped beer is really good - sometimes it's a bag of garbage. For example, every Toppling Goliath beer I have had has been crazy good. CA Brandy Huna, OTOH, was fine.

Tree House makes some really really good stuff. And Toppling Goliath as well.

The post regarding the Cantillon/ HF collaboration was Civil Disobedience 7, 600-ish bottles.

A bit more information on this:

I think calling it a collaboration is also a bit of a stretch. I asked Shaun about that directlly when I was there two weeks ago.

He told me that Cantillon lambic (2 year, single barrel, unblended) was part of the CD7 blend and that Jean did taste the final product and give it a thumbs up. However, there was no joint brewing/blending activity between the two and as such he didn't consider it a brewers collaboration or feel that it was proper to put "Cantillon" on the label anywhere. How he obtained the lambic and the blend proportions are secrets he didn't reveal.

However, he did say the HF crew is headed back to Belgium in the early spring for some more collabortive brews (Blaugies, Fantome)...and that he *hoped* something with Jean might be a distant potential possibility (even pro brewers can be starstruck sometimes?).

Everything you stated was true. However, one need not call it a collaboration for it to be a collaboration. If it looks like a duck, and smells like a duck, its a duck, even if you call it a goose.

    Agreed.

Just wanted the information out there that Shaun doesn't consider it as such.

Others will call it what they will.

    Point taken.

Now if Shaun were to do a "true" collaboration with Armand, thats something I would talk about, and drink, of course, all day.

Shaun would be sitting in the corner while Armand was doing his black magic.

If Armand and Urbain did a collaboration! I would gladly sit in a corner, fapping feverishly.

As to your icon, I dont know if you knew this, but Pai Mai translates to white eyebrow.

    This.

I happened to be at 3F the day that the HF crew visited there last fall and got the brewery tour/tasting with the HF crew (great day!). This was before Armand had the new brewery system up and running, but he took us through his plans in great detail. I spoke to him at The Festival in June and he was able to brew 13 batches over the course of last winter and was hoping for closer to 20 this winter.

As to a collab there...I know Armand visited HF on a "closed" day during his trip to the US, but I think that was more happenstance than specific planning.

I do know he holds Shaun's brewing skills in high regard as one of the spontaneous HF beers he tasted received a glowing review from him and he stated something to the effect that it needed "about another six months in the barrel" to be almost perfect. That was June...

    Reported.

I do know that the Portland area beer geeks are pretty secretive about good new releases. So I would start sniffing around there.
