I think this is great. I'm not a Christian, but I attend a "non denominational" (for lack of a better term) group who follows the core teachings of all major religions, as well as Ernest Holmes, Eckhart Tolle etc. Surprisingly enough, AA has a really awesome spiritual message too.
Anyway, I see craft beer and fellowship of any kind as perfect complements to each other. If you're a Christian (not one of the weird ones), I could see how it would be easy to look at the spiritual nature of beer in that it's a mixture of "God given" passion and creativity, as well as the power of the natural world. Not to mention that (in moderation) it can bring is closer to our fellows.

Dear god I need to move to the UK... A. Absolutely gorgeous church and B. Even better biergarten. I'm so jealous there isn't a proper way to articulate it, thus I'll revert to... you lucky fuck

The first one is called Oran Mor and the second one is called Cottiers, they are both bar/restaurant/theatres to make use of the big halls. I imagine they were both built round about the same time when the merchants of Glasgow were making loads of money out of the colonies.

Now if only they had made those halls into breweries instead  could fit some big fermentors in them

We are visionaries, we need to start a religion for beer and build massive monasteries to the beer gods. We'd be legends!

My younger brother is a devout practicing alcoholic, to the extent that he is drunk every morning by 7 and therefore can't work and lives with my parents who are in their 80's. He always drank, but when he found a church 15 years ago centered around moderate consumption of beer during services he learned to love that early morning buzz to the extent it destroyed his life. I see how this may attract a certain crowd, many of whom will remain responsible drinkers. But I also see this as being another way for the truly sick alkies to justify an early start to a drunken Sunday.

It may not be the secularists, but in my state it is the capitalists. The state of Indiana prohibits the sale of alcohol on Sunday from liquor stores, grocery stores, and gas stations. One of the largest supporters of this law is the hotel and restaurant lobby. Sale of alcohol is permitted in restaurants/brewpubs, etc. on Sunday. Many mom and pop shops are in support of the law, too. They claim it will not increase sales, but will increase the cost of doing business.

Don't blame the Christians for the restrictions. Follow the money!

Restaurants do the same in Utah because they love the law requiring patrons to order food with beer, for example. But current support is a very different topic than origination, and if you're going to try and persuade anyone that Sunday restrictions came from anywhere other than Christians, churches or other prominent religious groups in the U.S. then I think you're kidding yourself.

I am aware that the history of the restrictions came solely from the influence of "the church." I just find it interesting that the support for the law today comes from an economic group rather than a religious one.

I'm not a religious guy, but if I was ever on the fence about becoming one, this might just do the trick.

And besides. Per my understanding of Christianity, anything that brings a community together in a positive, constructive way is a good thing.

I find the boringness of church pairs well with the boringness of wine.

I attend a bible study/tasting group when I have time. I would be down if my church did something akin to this

I hear that. Sounds similar to my church.. We have a large number of craft beer fans. A group of us frequently get together to have beer tastings or poker & beer nights. My Bible study met in a local Irish pub for a while (it was only a small group of us). Heck, one guy in our church is even opening a brewpub in town. A good number of us are mug club members. It's a good group of guys and we're all responsible about it. It's good to have a group of close friends who are into the same things.

1st Thessalonians says to "pray without ceasing". Time to end your habit.

Seriously, I do believe as a Christian that there is no such thing as "secular". All things are done in the presence of God and if you fall under conviction, give it up. I believe that God provides many examples of people using libations to celebrate in life as well as part of daily routine.

Absolutely amazing atmosphere. Too bad their beer is shit.

My undergrad and graduate studies were in theology. My church's name is Riverview. We have a group of guys that brew beer called RiverBrew.

All things in moderation, my friends.

The local Lutheran church had a beer tasting for homebrewers in the church and one of my colleagues received a Martin Luther bobblehead doll for his efforts
