    no.
flogging the same opinion, popular or not, is not trolling. it's fucking annoying.

are we really carrying on a discussion based on the validity of one persons opinion? this is one of the more bizarre threads I have encountered in my 9 years at BA. is there any point?
    Cheers.

How would you know that all of the 100 beers in the stout barrel are actually stouts and not porters? How would you know that all of the 100 beers in the porter barrel are actually porters and not stouts? The only way you could classify them would be based on what the label says, but the label is completely arbitrary and up to the brewer. What one brewer calls a porter another may call a stout.

I think this distinction comes up more often now because there are so many RIS on the market now. And many of the porters are still of non imperial strength. It's kind of apples to oranges when you blanket the groups as a whole. I personally feel their are outstanding/good/meh examples labelled as either of all strengths. But overall it's a style of beer that I adore.

Don't open that door. I was nearly crucified once for having neither appreciation nor positive input on a certain libation. Just pretend you love everything and drink the cool aid.

A hundred random Porters between 5% and 6% and a hundred random Stouts between 5% and 6%?
I would say yes, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

I think the difficulty you're having with this, is that when a brewer creates a dark robust beer from 4% to 6.5%, with no coffee, barrels, bourbon, chocolate, etc. added, he/she usually calls it a Porter.

When a brewer creates a dark robust beer >6.5% it's usually called a Stout, or if they add, coffee, barrels, bourbon, chocolate, or whatever else into a dark robust beer, they usually go with the stout descriptor as well. There are of course exceptions to both of those scenarios, but I think it holds true to a degree.

Me too, Porters don't excite me much. I also realized I don't really like RIS or base coffee, chocolate stouts. I happen to like Pesche Mortel though, no reason why, I just do. FBS is good. but I walk by it in the store. I do like BA stouts quite a bit, GI stuff excites me, and I like Eclipse. I just prefer the barrel influence on my darker brews. I do like BA Peoples Porter, but this last batch was too much on the oak. We all like what we like, nothing wrong with that.

GLBC's Edmund Fitzgerald is in my overall top 5 (or top mix 6 if you prefer). It would also be considered my house beer, and is very often "in stock", regardless of season.

Hey.... a post I agree with. Someone gave me a 21st Amendment. "He Said, He Said" Porter on Halloween & I almost barfed. Overall Porter is generally dark and wimpy and if you are what you drink, it's not for me. When breweries try to "amp it up" with fake vanilla taste (thanks Ballast Point) or weird Pumpkin Spice it hurts the style immensely. I used to drink porters back in the day when the only stout I knew of was Guinness but times have changed, modern RIS'es are kicking some serious craft beer booty and while there may be a few delicious locally available examples of this style - there is (to my knowledge) no global hero making a Porter we can all celebrate.

You obviously haven't had a Crooked Letter Mystery Romp, it's a chocolate/coffee porter. It's only available on draft right now, but hopefully it will be in bottles soon so that others can enjoy. I believe it just hit the NOLA market.

In the spirit of co-existing-anation, Porters are the subdued cousins of high-octane Imperial Stouts. I prefer subtle Porters and Stouts, meself. Nuttin wrong w/ Imperials, I just like the more accessible stuff. A good Porter is a thang of beauty to behold on a chilly, damp evening. A good stout is , too.
