Jesus: Follow me, here's some water.
    Prospective Disciples: No way, Jose!
    (Jesus turns water into wine)
    Jesus: Check it, yo!
Prospective Disciples: Hallelujah! All hail the Son of God.

I hear ya. Its just my arrangement. If having a beer during a service or group study brings someone closer to what they subscribe to, then by all means, drink up.

This is a cool discussion. I have been wanting to start a beer and the bible group at my church. Unfortunately, a portion of the congregation would frown upon alcohol consumption. Worse yet, others might bring bud light. I love reading the similar experiences of others here.

    Two thoughts here:

    1. Rebuke the portion of the congregation that would frown up alcohol consumption (unless it's not in moderation). Forcing your conscience upon others is the real sin here.
    2. Rebuke the others that might bring Bud Light.

    ;-)

If you know the New Testament, Paul urged Timothy to drink some wine because of his stomach issues (likely dysentery).

I don't know much, but enough to know that wine/spirits were used to keep the shits away from drinking bad water. Never had Montezuma's revenge but my brother did, for about two weeks. Ugh.

That would go over like a proverbial "fart in church" round here:grimacing:

I like the idea. It may bring in some who are not Christians, but it is a great open door for some curious non-believers.

#1 - While I probably wouldn't do this, I don't disagree with your point here. This actually raises a strong point that our pastor preached about last week, regarding legalism. Essentially, for things that are not expressively stated in the bible, (such as "thou shalt not drink" [my own words]), expanding what the Bible says as truth, as would be the case you mentioned here, is really just being legalistic. While his sermon wasn't actually about consuming alcohol, that definitely tends to be one of "those" topics in many churches.

As for #2 - amen brother. hahah

Self control is also considered very important, one thing I struggle with at times (mostly the fact that I am over 300#). But we tend to widen the path to fit our needs, we are still human after all.
    Matthew 7:13-14
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Thats funny. I attended a (loosely affiliated) SBC church in the NYC area for a couple years. I say loosely because I think an entire year went by before I even found out that we were affiliated with them; and I was very heavily involved during that time. For the most part, it was your typical NYC crowd; fairly liberal, young professionals. Anyhow, apparently the pastor was out at dinner somewhere with some friends and had a beer with his dinner. Someone from the local SBC organization saw him, reported him to the head SBC office (or whatever it is), and they basically kicked the church out of the denomination. The whole thing was pretty ridiculous.

For clarification, I would challenge people as stated in #1 under a few specific circumstances:
    Within the context of relationships
    and/or
    Gently and respectfully

As a follower of Jesus, I'd encourage you to live your life freely in this manner:
Let the Scriptures be your primary source for what is or is not sin
Let the authorities and laws over you govern your actions after the Scriptures
Let your conscience about anything not crystal clear in the Scriptures or in the laws we're governed by determine what is or is not sin for you

With that said, let's crack some beers!!

Regardless of who was responsible for implementation ninety-something years ago, we all know why these laws are being held in place today. You'd actually be hard pressed to to find modern day members of many of the organizations that were the biggest advocates of the Temperance Movement.

    Unitarian?

The concept of beer not being religiously wrong was really foreign to me for a long time. Being a good Mormon until college I was stunned the first time I saw a priest drink. Now my best drinking buddies are good members of their churches. Oh and I've gotten over the stigma of alcohol being bad :-)
