    Hey All,

I am planning to drive across North Carolina this weekend and plan to stop at both Foothills and Olde Hickory. I have never been to either so am looking for advice and recommendations from other BA folks. Based on my current itinerary I expect to arrive Saturday evening or Sunday, hitting Olde Hickory and then continuing on to Foothills. Most likely will be staying overnight on Saturday.

Some thing I am interested in are:
    • Recommended (and currently available) beers
    • Recommended places to stay nearby (in Hickory or Winston-Salem)
    • Where I can purchase bottled beer to take home (any restrictions on Sunday?)
    • General impressions of each place and tips for making most of the visit
    Thanks in advance. Cheers!

For Hickory, Hops and Grapes is a very good bottle shop. You can purchase beers straight from the Olde Hickory Brew Pub or Amos Howards. Get some Lindley Park, Impy Stout or Redeemer. Brew pub is pretty nice, the new Train Station place is nicer, I like Amos Howards the best.

Your in between Lindley Park and Event Horizion releases. You can get Growlers at Foothills, Jade IPA, and BBL Porter are worth a look, BBL Porter is also in bombers. I'd grab some Olde Mecklenburgs too, I would assume City beverage in WS would have some, but I'd check their web sight, out side of Charlotte it's very limited, but it's great stuff. Bestway in Greensboro carries their products as well as most NC brewers. Bring some NoDa Ipa home with you too, it's terrific.

In Winston, I would stay downtown at the Marriott or Embassy Suites. $100-$150 range. You'll be within walking distance of Foothills, Mellow Mushroom and Rec Billiards. MM and Rec both have a good bottle/draft selection (MM being better).

As for bottle shops, hit Stella Brew and City Bev. But if time does not bother you, then I would suggest Bestway in Greensboro or Brewers Kettle in High Point. BW is the most inexpensive of all shops (FYI).

If you want recommendations for dinner let me know.

When I was in hickory last weekend they still had bottles of Lindley at the hickory station. Definitely worth snagging one if they're still available.

When you're in Winston-Salem, there is a decent chance a new brewery will be opening this Friday (Small Batch) that is also downtown and about a 5-7 minute walk from Foothills.

My personal favorite for dinner in WS is Mozelle's, which is just a block or two away from City Beverage. Mary's Gourmet Diner is awesome for breakfast too.

The Olde Hickory brewery itself isn't open to the public, so visit the taproom and then head over to the new Olde Hickory Station to see what they have as well. You can have lunch or dinner at either.

The Amos Howards Brew Pub is a very cool spot and worth visiting; it's where Olde Hickory got its start, though they no longer brew there. Their drafts are almost entirely made up of Olde Hickory beers, though, and you can buy bottles there, too. And you can eat in drink in giant beer barrels!

Foothills is great, too, and the City Beverage recommendation is a good one. As has been pointed out, Small Batch should be opening this weekend, and they're not far at all from Foothills. Hoots Roller Bar is a cool spot, though they're not brewing yet.

If you're staying Saturday night, definitely get a reservation for Sunday brunch at Willow's, it's great!

Lots of options for food Saturday night downtown -
Sweet Potatoes on Trade St. is great southern soul food, but be prepared for a wait if you go during prime dinner hours cause they don't do reservations - go early or go late.
Mooney's on 4th is a laid back and casual Lebonese cafe, and you can't beat their hummas or shwarma.
King's Crab Shack, also on 4th, if you want seafood.
Hutch & Harris Bistro has a large and eclectic menu and is generally very good.

You can always just eat at Foothills or Mellow Mushroom as well!

Made this same trip last Saturday, starting in Asheville. We enjoyed lunch at Amos Howards along with Lindley Park and Redeemer on tap, then started our way to WS. Stopped in WS at Stella Brew, which was pretty impressive for a newly opened shop. Then checked into the Marriott, down to Foothills for large amounts of Jade, walked to dinner at Wen Hwa (Asian Fusion), then finished up at Mellow Mushroom with Bells Expedition and Great Divide Fresh Hop. Woke up Sunday and enjoyed brunch at 6th & Vine before hitting the road home.

My only real grip about the trip was the lack of selection at Foothills. They had Jade, but everything else was pretty much their standard selection. Nothing barrel aged, no Battle Crye .... but as always Jade was worth the couple hours spent there. The bartender said they were in the middle of a "seasonal transition".

Mozelles - Agree with the post above. Good southern cuisine here. Get the collard greens with bacon.
4th st. filling station - More healthier selections here than Mozelles but still very good food.
6th and vine - awesome environment and sometimes has music on the weekend. don't let the name fool you as even though they have a great wine selection, their beer selection is good. Great eclectic food here.
Finnigan's Wake - A nice irish pub with good pub food and now tapping into the craft beer market. Good rotating tap list and sometimes some surprises.
Mellow Mushroom - Great pizza chain with an awesome tap list. Probably the best downtown. Rec Billiards is close to it as well.

Hey All. Thanks for your suggestions. Here's a quick summary:

    1) Stopped at Bruisin Ales in Asheville. Great bottle shop. Picked up lots of NC locals. They even had a few bottles of Lindley Park 2013 left.

    2) Visited Amos Howard's in Hickory. Very cool little place. Awesome bartender (Jeff) who was happy to chat and provide honest opinions on their brews. Great variety on tap including Lindley Park, Irish Walker, Redeemer, and Death by Hops.

    3) Dropped in at Foothills in Winston-Salem. As another poster above said, they had Jade on tap, but nothing else that was extremely interesting. They did have bottles of Battle Crye for sale, so I picked up a couple of those along with couple glasses and a t-shirt. Probably should have got a growler of Jade, which is excellent, but (a) I have almost no room for more cold stuff at home and (b) wasn't sure how well it would travel on the long drive.

    4) Last stop at Bestway in Greensboro. They had a fantastic selection of locals and non-locals. I found NoDa Hop, Drop 'n Roll in tall boy cans. That's an excellent beer that I had never tried. Talked to the beer guy there. They recently put in a growler fill operation and will soon have up to 26(!!) beers on tap. He said, given demand, they are hoping to always have Jade IPA as one of those.

    Cheers!
