OK, my bad. I read your first post as suggesting I was trying to convince all of BA not to drink porters. Talk about a fool's errand.

Anyway, from the posts in this thread I have learned the following curiously incongruous facts:
    1. Some people prefer porters to stouts.
    2. Some people prefer stouts to porters.
    3. There is no difference between porters and stouts.

But this has all been discussed to death now, and in the face of such massive opposition I'm hereby conceding defeat. Clearly there's still a compelling reason to bother with porters.

I actually agree with this thread. Not a huge fan of porters.

And I too have had most, if not all of the porters that people are throwing out as "well try THIS". Black Butte, Founders, Victory at Sea, etc. etc. Those beers are all fine and dandy, but in my opinion they get smashed by Speedway Stout, Imp. Biscotti Break, Parabola, narwhal, 10 Fidy, and countless other Stouts.

    personal taste I guess

I'll play devils advocate. I feel the OP for sure. I rarely buy Porters anymore. And to those saying "what about VAS" Give me a break. VAS is the shit!, But it's an imperial coffee vanilla bomb. Hardly a run of the mill Porter. Like say Founders is. I bought Founders when it landed in Florida. Good porter for sure, just like Lil B, but with all the great stouts (and revved up porters like VAS) out there, I won't buy either again.

For me it just depends on the individual beer.

Why barrel age? Black Butte is good already. -_-

    Porters are stouts...

What if KBS was KBP... You'd probably still reach for it, or would you pass because you want something called a stout instead.

Aside from a Baltic Porter, Robust Porters are pretty much interchangable with Stout.

aren't some Baltic Porters made with warm fermented lager yeasts or cold fermented ale yeasts?
also, not *all* ale yeasts are top fermenting and not all lager yeasts are bottom fermenting...

Why would people choose anything but IPAs when there are so many available?

I think we can agree that Imperial Stouts and Baltic Porters have generally higher ratings than their lower strength Porter and Stout cousins. (not that we would all agree which is superior)

Why bother with beer when you can have concentrated beer (i.e. whiskey).

Entire premise of the OP is flawed as I am guessing has been pointed out already by many.

The only top fermenting yeast that I know of are ale yeast strains.

    Cheers!

Did anyone mention that Porters match incredibly well with certain foods, much better than a heavier bodied stout?

Example: porter-house steak with a decent porter can be amazing.

I'll have to revisit my Yeast book as I could have sworn it mentions some top fermenting lager strains

OP sounds like a beer snob. Porters are a great style. You're so hopped up, excuse the pun, on extreme american craft styles where the line is blurred between american porters and stouts.

I'm a beer snob because I generally prefer stouts over porters? That's a dumb thing to say.
Also, despite this thread I still believe there's usually a subtle but perceivable difference between the two styles.

    I prefer a nice stourter.

Has anyone done a blind tasting with several examples of stouts and porters to see if there is a clearly discernable difference?

It's on my to-do list (see this post). Of course there is some overlap, as there is between APAs and IPAs. But I think broadly speaking, if you compare aggregates, there's still a difference.
