I was just thinking the same thing the other day while enjoying my first two Jubelale of the season. It's freakin delicious this year! But I wasn't thinking bourbon barrels. I was thinking straight up Brandy barrels. I think the Brandy would do wonders for that minty, fruity character Jubelale has. Gotta love Deschutes. This, Red Chair, Chainbreaker, and now their River Ale are some of the best stuff in 6 packs IMO

I love Deschutes beer, but I will have to disagree on the chainbreaker. It tastes like what I imagine urine from the bladder of a dehydrated wild boar would taste like.

    /unnecessary troll - maybe.

Thought I was the only one who thought that. Glad to have some company there.

I'm just thankful that I can tell the difference.

I'd prefer some sort of wine barrel aging. otherwise it's just gonna taste like bourbon. if i want to drink something that tastes like bourbon i'll simply buy bourbon.

You're aware that wine is also a standaone product, right?

I am but the wine barrel aged beers I have are not overpoweringly wine flavored as bourbon barrel aged beers are. Wine aged beers are more nuanced in the flavor the barrels depart. Bourbon barrel aged beers are just cave man style pounding your taste buds with bourbon flavor. heck, even just straight unused oak barrels would depart are more interesting flavor than simply turning x beer into a bourbon wannabe.

Yeah a lot of people seem to not like Chainbreaker. But it's usually the people who just want big west coast IPA's all the time. Bitter in your face. I think the wheat really makes the Chainbreaker smooth and recall Green Flash doing a collab with Founders, (linchpin) I believe, that was also damn tasty. It's a nice break from the hop bombs I think.

I would just prefer a little Abyss showing up this year in SW Mizzou or hell, even more Hop Trip...

I just don't thinks this year's Jubel Ale was that good or has enough malt to stand up to most barrel aging. Maybe wine barrel as previously posted would work...

No... Jubelale is meant for subtle holiday spices. If you put that in a barrel it loses all holiday spice and gains a metric shit ton of overpowering bourbon flavors... Abyss will suffice for barrel aged holiday beer, leave Jubelale the way it is. Deschutes please continue making great beer...

Velvet Merkin is a great beer, but I have to agree with deschutes_fan and say that the body was lacking, which made the barrel notes less pronounced. I also think that if Jubelale were to get barrel treatment, something like brandy would be better suited than bourbon.
