    I used "so called" because of course Stout derives from London and not Ireland. Guinness didn't brew it himself; he brought in the London family , the Pursers, to do it for him.
    Arthur Guinness and his descendants were staunch supporters of British rule in Ireland.But this isn't the point at issue, it is a matter of record that the brewery didn't use any roast barley until the death of Lord Iveagh in 1928.The use of roasted barley was made legal in 1880 but few brewers in fact bothered with it as it was considered to give inferior results.
    The style we call Dry Irish Stout can only be traced back to the 1950s according to Ron Pattinson. As an historian you must know of him, he works primarily from contemporary brewing records and other documents.And of course Martyn Cornell's work is based on sound research from contemporary documents too.
