I just opened a Ballast Point Victory at Sea coffee vanilla Porter. I bought it because it is at #71 on the 250 best beers list. When I opened it, it had a strange, fishy smell. My wife and I both agreed it tasted like a dead halibut shoved up a skunk's ass. We had to drain pour it. Has anyone else experienced this? It had to have been bad or infected, because nobody would purposely sell a beer that tasted like this.

I had it on tap at the pony bar in manhattan on monday. I thought it was more amazing than I remembered.

The only Victory at Sea here is still in the old labels. But i've never had a bad bottle over all the years. In all my home brewing and beer drinking i've never had a fishy infection....my friend just said it must be a "yeast" infection and I thought she was being serious :|

This was the new label. Bought at Wegmans today. I'm telling you, this was bad. It tasted like bad fish smells. What bothers me is I bought 2 bottles, and I'm afraid to open the second one. It was really that bad!

I drink Victory At Sea a lot haha. Its one of my favorite beers. Never had that problem. Sounds like an infected bottle

Again, this was absolutely undrinkable. I have had bretts, sours, all sorts of unusual flavors. This had to be a mistake. The label was a light colored background, unlike the one used on this site when I looked up the beer. Please let me know if anyone else experiences this. Thanks guys and gals.

Drank three bottles in the past week and they were all delicious. No fishy taste at all.

Sounds like you got the new "Shooting Fish In A Barrel" barrel aged version, should taste like dead fish and gunpowder

But seriously, never had a problem with this beer, I suggest you open the other bottle, if it's some sort of widespread infection it's likely not getting any better and you should notify the brewery, if the second bottle is fine you just got an off bottle. Doesn't hurt to notify brewery of that either, they lift hook something up and it's always good to get that sort of info back up the chain.

Haven't had this yet, picked a bottle up and put it back down when I was at Wegman's tonight. But that does sound like some sort of infection, and it can't hurt to notify BP either way.
Good luck on the second bottle and let us know!

I have been messaged by a Ballast Point rep who gave me an email to report my experience. Strong work when the brewers are viewing these message boards and trying to fix problems or answer concerns.
