I've done Bell's and Founder's, but outside of Kuhnhenn's, I have no idea what to do in Detroit for a day. Should I just hit up Kuhnhenn's or am I better off at another brewery or beer store/bar? I can't wonder too far away from Detroit metro area (+/- 30 minute drive).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Near Kuhnhenn is Dragonmead which is worthy of a visit. They have 40 or so taps available, and all are very good. I'll also agree with the recommendation for Slow's BBQ near downtown. They have the reputation of being busy and you have to wait to get in, so try to pick an off time. Across the street is a place with reportedly great burgers that has been touted in the GL forum threads like this one, but I can't recall the name. (Edit: Maybe it's Mercury bar.)

Dragonmead is good too, but the only thing Kuhnhenns and Dragonmead are lacking is the food side (although you can bring your own in). If you're looking for take-homes, can hit up Champagnes near Kuhnhenns, Holiday Market and/or Cloverleaf in Royal Oak, etc etc. as well.

Date(s) you'll be in town and amount of free time you'll have would help here... suggestions will vary depending.

Black Friday (Nov 29th). I am hitting Hopping Frog in Akron, OH for their BORIS release at noon...so I'll probably be in Detroit from 4pm to midnight.

Dragonmead has some food, but it's only a small list of 3 deli sandwiches, a cheeseburger, a pizza and some snacks (cheese plate, sausage/crackers, venison sticks, nachos & cheese, popcorn and nuts). The sandwiches are very good.

Non-beer related, but do the tour of the Henry ford house. It sounds super lame, but it gives you crazy perspective on the city after walking through that place.

Well, that actually may work to your advantage here. Slows is one of my favorite spots but, as has already been mentioned, it can be a bit difficult to get in to. If you're rolling in to town around 4pm you could go straight there for some BBQ and a great beer selection, earlier the better to avoid that dinner rush. Afterwards you can pop up to Kuhnehnn for the evening, with a short stop at Champagnes for some bottles which is just down the road.

PS - just checked the Red Wings schedule, they are out of town that day so that'll help your case at Slows. Even if its busy use the time to grab a few beers and if need be walk across the street to Mercury Bar.

Another option would be Slows To Go. Same food, just from their take out location along the Cass Corridor. Stop en route to Kuhnhenn and just bring it in with you...so long as you don't eat it all while driving.

I'm not sure what it is, but I love being able to bring my own food in to a brewery. DRIPA with a Slow's triple threat sounds might appealing right now.

Ok...looks like Slows BBQ, champagnes, dragonmead and Kuhnhenns are a solid plan.

    Big thanks.

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet but One Eyed Bettys in Ferndale is amazing. Great tap list and great food. Might be a bit out of your way, but good.

If you're in Ferndale make sure to go to 8 Degrees Plato to shop around. Great selection, great owners

A little north of Detroit in Rochester is Clubhouse BFD, prolly the best selection of draft in the area. Great food too. You can see their draft list on beermenus.com

Black Forest has sold their brewery equipment and stopped brewing, and the last I heard they were just selling out of their beers. That's been a month or so, thus it's likely they have none of their beers left now.

Your best stores will be Holiday Market in Royal Oak (highly recommended), Cloverleaf in Royal Oak (recommended), Merchant's in Dearborn (recommended) and 8 Degrees Plato in Ferndale (recommend).

I would skip Dragonmead personally. If it was me I would hit Slows BBQ during the day, Holiday Market in Royal Oak then Kuhnhenns. That will give you the absolute best of the best IMO.

That house is gorgeous, well worth visiting.

This is way overpriced and NOT worth visiting at all. I would easily go to One Eyed Betty's in Ferndale, Palate in Milford or Uptown Grille in Commerce Twp for any beer bars.

    They are closed now.

How long is the wait normally at Slows? I'll be in Detroit around 6 or so that night as well (going to UM/OSU the next day) and am looking to hit up Slows for dinner and then head to Kuhnhenn.
