Recently, I've noticed (with enthusiasm) that craft beer is starting to catch on within the female population, although it clearly remains a male dominated sport (sport?). I'm proud to say that my fiancee is as much into beer as I am, and she's nearly as much of a hop head.

Do you guys have similar observations? Female BA members out there care to chime in about your experiences.

Also, what are your thoughts on how (if at all) female craft drinkers approach the sport differently?

I might add that, after expanding the selection of beer I have on stock at all times, I've managed to get some of my fiancee's female friends into craft beer, too. For the most part, most girls I know still cannot handle the truly hoppy IPAs that I love, but I've yet to meet a girl who hasn't loved a good Saison (Brooklyn Sorachi Ace, for instance) or Heady Topper.

For the record, most of these girls were career wine drinkers before, and are of the sort of beautiful, well-read girls who you would expect to see with a nice glass or expensive wine or top shelf cocktail. I've taken some of them to beer festivals, and I'm proud that they were willing to try their hand at craft and enjoy it.

My wife likes craft beer just as much as I do. she's the one that got me into drinking beer in the first place. And got me into loving stouts and imperial stouts. We mostly drink together and share all the beers, try as much new beers as possible.

When I first met my girl her idea of a craft beer was Miller Chill! Had my bday this week she picked up a 6er of 2 Hearted, 4 pack of Founders Harvest Ale and a bomber of Dreadnaught. Needless to say, she caught on over the past 5 years... I couldn't be more proud :-D

I've been enjoying craft beers for over 15 years, and my wife would barely sip most of the beers that I would drink. However, over the years she has gradually caught on and now has a mug club membership where I do. She and I disagree on how good (or bad) some particular beers are when we visit a brewery for the first time and share a sampler (I'm always right), but she's gaining experience so that those differences are diminishing.

I'm a girl. I like beer. I wish there wasn't the separation . . . "female craft beer drinker." I think that there are a lot more girls on BA than you may realize and it's a good thing. I originally started tasting beer to keep up with my son who was turning twenty one and wanted to try beer. I thought; "Well, how about let's instill a little love for the finer things and learn a bit about wine, cooking and beer. =)

My fiancee is into craft beer as well.. not as big as I am but she cant stand BMC beer anymore. Wont even touch it... shes very wierd as she doesn't like hoppy beers but I've given her beers I thought were pretty hoppy and she loved em... gave her one porter and she loved it... another porter from another brewer she hated... its all up in the air... so I just have her taste whatever I'm drinking... then I keep a mental note of what brand/style she likes.

My wife hates beer, all beer. I've tried over and over and it has never ended remotely well. Overall (at least from what I see around me) craft beer is very male dominated. The last beer festival I went to and the last craft beer bar I was at had probably a 20:1 ratio, if that. That's not uncommon to see.

I'm a female craft beer lover who turned her Coors Light husband into a serious hop head. My first craft beer was in the early 90s at my brothers wedding and I was hooked. Then I got my husband drinking different beers and styles. My only complaint about being a female drinker is that most men assume we all drink fruit beers. I love a great IPA, Barrel aged beers or just about anything that has a lot of layers.

My girlfriend is a craft beer fan and it is good for us because we each get to try more beers overall by sharing. She has a lot of friends who enjoy craft beers as well, maybe not to the point of wanting to analyze and write in depth BA reviews, but enough to want to try newer things, and actively look for sonething other than a BMC or Heineken.

My wife has been drinking been since 1970. Good beer in 1987, 5 minutes after we met. She enjoys wits, hefe, lambic (fruit), dubbels, but not tripels, and saison. Though she is open to new stuff, she hates any overly hopped beers.

I totally feel you on this one, and I agree that it's an unfair assumption (girls only liking fruit beers). Unfortunately, i think it's a stereotype that's based in fact, and I'm happy to say that I see more and more girls breaking that stereotype.

Over the last two years, I've met more and more girls excited to do brewery tours and who are really buying into the craft beer culture.

As much as I agree that I wish there wasn't a separation, I think the reality is that female craft beer drinkers are still rare. I'm happy to hear that you know a lot of craft beer drinkers who happen to be female, and I agree that it's a good thing. If anything, my OP was about celebrating the fact that I'm noticing more and more female craft beer drinkers. I'm truly excited about spreading the craft beer love as far and wide as I can.

My wife loves great beer and it keeps her from drinking wine too fast. Big, bitter IPAs to wonderfully rich malty Belgian golds, she's at home. Darker beers are a work in progress.

Interesting. I find darker beers are often easier to drink than big, bitter, hoppy beers for the majority of beer drinkers I know

She drinks pretty fast, rather than savors. I think the roasty aspect of some darker selections puts her off a touch.

My best "beer friend" is female. She's the only one I know though. She can really put down some quality IPA.

I can see that being an issue. Dark beers are often thicker or more filling. I like them cause they are smooth. Of course, I also love hoppy beers, although I do not subscribe to the "Hoppier-the-better" school of thought. Heady Topper is my favorite IPA, after all, and it definitely isn't the hoppiest or most bitter.

My girlfriend is a work in progress; hated beer until she met me and still not much of a fan, but she's at least trying for me (and I do the same for her with white wines). She'll try most things I'm drinking and usually responds with the "tastes like beer" comment, but shockingly enough the couple beers so far that she's actually really enjoyed (and ordered seconds of!) have been BA stouts. And she doesn't even care for bourbon either, go figure.
