Hey folks! Grew up in the Allentown area years ago, flying back from Minneapolis for the Thanksgiving holiday. Looking for bottle ship recommendations since I'll be hunting for bcBs and other goodies. Is Shangys still the best? Any insight is appreciated!
Bottle shop? Shangy's sells cases as they're a distributor. As far as I've found (and I haven't felt the need to look much further), a short drive into Bethlehem to hit up Abe's is your best bet. I can't say whether or not they get BCBS though.
Shangy's is still cases only. Check out the newly renovated Wegmans on Tilghman st. for singles, sixers, etc. If you enjoy non-stop whistling while shopping for beer along with higher prices, head to Abe's.
Abe whistles a lot. Some of their prices aren't really higher. The selection is also better than Wegmans. Wegs is the best bet other than Abe's though, unless you're trying to get a case of something.
Tavern on Liberty(Woody's) right across the street from my Soph year dorm at Muhlenberg for beers while you're back home. I was amazed to heard this place changed over from probably the sketchiest bar I've ever been to and is now a great little craft beer bar without losing the neighborhood charm. They also sell bottles to go. Pretty reasonable draft prices. http://www.beermenus.com/places/8094-tavern-on-liberty
Since the expansion and addition of The Pub, the selection at Wegman's has really gotten a lot better. I love how they have it broken into regional sections with the shelves now, better than the helter skelter shelving it used to be. Shangy's still has a large selection if you are looking for cases, that's for sure!
I work in Allentown. The one time at Abe's I was not impressed but maybe they'll get bourbon county. I do like the Wegmans but last year they only got 1 case of regular, got it months late, and only 24 of us got 1 bottle each. I called Shangys other day, no info. If you want, send me an email, I'll tell you where to shop Friday in my area, which is 1 hour south of Allentown, easy turnpike trip.
