Day 4 - Nürnberg and Bamberg

We had to pass through Nürnberg to get to Bamberg. I had read about Rotbier on this forum and wanted to try it. Nürnberg wurst was also an attraction. So we got off the train, stashed the luggage and walked to the Hausbrauerei Altstadt.

They are actually more known for their Schwarzebier than the Rotbier. Anyhow, I ordered the Rotbier and my wife, the Schwarzebier. And wurst, of course.

    The sausages were very good.

Actually, the biers were good, too. Worth a try.

I didn't tell my wife that I had another stopped planned. We "happened" to walk by das Wirthaus on the way back to the Hauptbahnhof. I've been reading good things about Andechs biers and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to try a couple. Since it was a another beautiful day, we again sat outside and watched the world go by.

I ordered the Doppelbock Dunkel and my wife tried the Spezial Hell. Actually, they brought her a Weizen first, but I pointed out the error and they took it way and brought the Hell. The biers lived up to their rep. These are now being imported into the USA. I hope they make it to St. Louis. I've already talked to a local distributor about it.

    On to Bamberg!

The last time were in Bamberg, Spezial was closed so we had to go there first. Plus it was the closest Brauerei to our hotel. This would turn out to be a good thing later.

We both tried the Lagerbier (Rauchbier) first. I had a second while my wife tried the Wiessebier. The Lagerbier was great.

It only made sense to try Schenkerla right after that. Since Ur-Bock was available, we had that first. The Bock balances the smoke so well, nice and rich. Then we bought a couple of the Märzens, took them outside bought some slices of Giuseppe's Pizza to go with it. The Worlds Best according to @herrburgess. Almost a perfect meal. Between Spezial and Schenkerla, I prefer the Lagerbier to the Märzen, but the Ur-Bock stands above them both.

Walking back to the hotel, we walked past Fässla. They were having their Bockbieranstich. It didn't look too busy so we decided to try the Bambergator. Turned out to be one more bier than I needed that night. Oh well.

Your first mistake  You go look at the Wurstkuch'l and maybe, if you're brave you get a Bratwurstkipfer'l to go but you never ever sit down there. Although, judging by your picture you caught the place on a particularly empty day so at least you got to eat overpriced without 2 Japanese sitting on your lap.

Jacob's flagship beer is actually their Weizen. The rest of their portofolio is "just" Bavarian standard which means head, shoulders and torso above what Lesser Germany has to offer but I digress :grinning:

Did you go inside and saw the proverbial "Green Table" ? That is where Cheryl and I got married

Regensburg was an Imperial Free City until 1806 (and was so for over 500 years...) and when, as part of the Napoleonic re-arranging of Germany the "Bavarian Takeover" happened, they installed a garrison. Only, being Bavarians and all, they didn't install military, they installed a Hofbräuhaus. I've been in there maybe twice in my life. Their bathrooms are easily accessible and much cleaner than the public ones at the Alte Rathaus.

What, no Spital Pale Ale ? :astonished: :grinning:

Well, you were there on a week day when people under 65 are supposed to work or study. Go there at night or on a weekend and you'll get a very different picture.

:grinning: That is signature material, hehehe.

Well, "ire" is too strong a term. Next time you should bring more time though so you can scout the jewels of the immediate surrounding of Regensburg.

Serious question, what is the difference between Export and Spezial? Is it a point-of-origin or nomenclature thing, or is there more to it?

It's something you have to do once. I won't need to try it next time.

    This place?

I didn't see it on the Bierkarte. I'll try it again. If I can pull myself away from Kneitinger.

Good idea. Now I have to figure out how to do that.

I know, I was kidding. It really was a choice of one day in Regensburg or none. I think of it as more of a scouting visit. Next time will be a real visit.

Mmm. Maybe it's just a style in my head. I did add it as a German style on Wikipedia and no-one deleted it, so it must be real.

Edelstsoff. That's what I think of when I hear Spezial.

Which is funny to me because the bottle says Edelstoff Exportbier if I remember correctly.

A funny story. A guy I worked with met ‘somebody’ at the British Air Club in London, He talked to this ‘somebody’ for quite some time (20 minutes?) At the end of the conversation he shook his hand and said my name is Jim. The ‘somebody’ said: my friends call me Keith. Jim was speaking to Keith Richards for a long time and he didn’t know it (at the time).

I wonder if Stahl has a story like that!?!

    Prost!

IMHO I also believe that Helles=Export=Spezial=Edelstoff. Just depends on who you're drinking with.

I don’t think Spezial is something different from Export either. They have always seemed interchangeable to me, with some breweries even labelling their beers "Spezial-Export".

Spezial can just about mean anything. For most cases, you are right, it is a term for an Export, especially in southern Germany. Sometimes it might also refer to a Festbier/Märzen style.
I wouldn't say that Export=Helles though. A typical Bavarian brewery might have a regular Helles as their standard beer and they might also have a slightly stronger, slightly more golden and slightly sweeter Helles (a.k.a an Export) which they might call a Spezial to distinguish it from their regular Helles.

To add to this, I've also seen Export Dunkels (Andechs makes one), As far as I knew it was just a strength designation, used interchangeably with Spezial.
