Syracuse Post Standard announced a new craft brewery opening scheduled for last week of November. Double Barrel Brewing located in Eastwood area on James St "in the back of Sacred Melody Plaza" to offer a full range of styles with emphasis on IPA's. Offering take away growler fills initially.

I saw that, liked them on facebook, guess the guy is a staple in the Salt City Brew Club circles and pretty well known. I nterested to try some of the brews.

That is terrific! I'll check it out for sure. Middle Ages has never quite cut it for me.

How soon til they get sued and have to change their name? A google search of "double barrel brewing" has the first few results of a brewery with the same name in Cincinatti OH.

Wonder if dude is even aware. You'd figure prior to naming a brewery you'd do a little research to make sure that exactly this didn't occur.

I hope nothing comes of it, Syracuse could use a little competition in the beer scene. Very underwhelming brews by both Middle Ages and Empire. Hope competition would make these guys think outside the box a little.

I would love to see a collaboration between a local brewery and local winery. With all the great wineries in the Finger Lakes I would like to see Middle Ages or Empire do some sort of wine barrel age collaboration. The stuff that these two put out is just rather boring in my opinion and shows little creativity.

    Agreed 100%. Standard, boring beers.

I agree with both of these posts above... Ah it can be pretty frustrating at times!

Yeah we went yesterday afternoon. $2/ eight samples. Pretty good crowd. Owners seemed like very nice folks. Beers were passable but nothing great IMO. Our favorites were the porter, brown, and milk stout. Hoppy offerings had nice aroma but had a weird finish. Carbonation from beer to beer seemed to vary quite a bit and some of the beers lacked body. We grabbed a growler of the porter and we will be back to in the future to see how things progress

I was there too - the brown was my favorite by far, probably the milk stout 2nd. I think some of the carbonation issues resulted from the quick pace of getting ready for the opening, and I think some beers were still a bit green for the same reason, so no doubt these issues will get worked out. But good opening overall and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Are they on tap anywhere? Going to be in Syracuse on Wednesday night before driving the rest of the way to Philly and although we are getting in late would love to be able to try one or two of their brews.

With a few exceptions; Just seems lately the majority of the myriad of central NY brewing start ups are home grown first time efforts by hobby brewers resulting in mediocre brews. A few have caught their stride like Two Goats,Roosterfish and Horseheads and recently Abandon Brewing but the majority struggle to create palatable identifiable examples of various styles.
