Again, there are many beers I've not tried, but after Backwoods Bastard, KBS, and many other barrel-aged stouts, porters, scotch ales, and barley wines, Wulver really shines as the example of what a barrel can do for a beer.

I like Wulver, but I'll be honest. I think the grist of Wulver is probably superior in taste, but the barrel aging is lacking compared to the heat that Backwoods brings to the table.

Both are world class, IMO, but BB gets the nod. Wulver is twice the price and twice as less barrel.

So I can understand better: do you think BB has more barrel characteristics, and is therefore better? Because I would agree that BB is more barrel-forward (especially, more bourbon-forward). I think I just prefer the less 'hot' Wulver.

Yes. BB has more of the barrel notes. Much more of that creamy vanilla and coconut notes that make the beer so delicious. Wulver has this amazing caramel note and the subtle sweet vanilla from the barrel.

I like the more bourbon forward of the two. Both are world class though. Wulver is flat out delicious and has a superior grist. If I could get their grain bill with founders barrel it would be THE best scotch ale out there.

Actually, they made it several times dating back to 2011, they just never called it Wulver, it was simply "barrel aged Wee Heavy". I distinctly remember having it at the Winking Lizard cask fest in March, 2011 as it was hands-down the best beer there. Cheers!

Ya, I know. I thought they changed the recipe or barrels cause I thought it tasted different. I didn't want to assume the BA Wee Heavy in past years was Wulver exactly just because the styles are the same.
